 Julian spots the cat, and he gasps happily. He's never seen a cat. Just heard about cute little pets that purr. He goes to pet it. 

 It allows you to pet it, purring quietly.

At the top of the stairs, there's a door with a circular symbol on the front of it.

He traces the circle with his finger, then opens the door slowly.

 You open the door... but there isn't much of a room to enter. There's are walls and all, but the floor and roof are absent. There's an at least 20x20 meter square hole taking up where the floor should be, going down into what seems to be an endless void as far as you can see. It goes up too, through the roof, as far is you can see into a dark abyss. You can feel a relatively strong wind coming up from the bottom too.

"Whaaaa..." He's baffled. Where's the floor?? He sticks a hand out into the darkness, that's all.

 Its... cold. You can't see your hand, but you can feel its still there.

He shivers, from the frigidness, but mostly from fear. He clutches the cat tightly. "Drummer said to explore.. arhh! Kitty, we're goin in!" And he hops nervously into the black void.
