In our world elves are viewed as an inferior race ... Slaves, Servants, Commoners and the like ... I've been toying with an idea of creating a Paladin who is a half elf. His oath would be to free the elves .... In game i think it would be an oath of the ancient kind of idea ... has anyone tried this in the past? how did it turn out? Is a "Freedom Fighter" an RP nightmare?
I think a "Freedom Fighter" can work as a character, though I'm not sure how well they work with a Paladin, unless you're thinking of going Oath of Conquest since it sounds like you'd have to conquer those who have enslaved Elves, I might be wrong though. If you want to do something kind of unique, try asking your DM if you could be a Paladin without a deity to be sworn to, just have it be that your character was born with a connection to divine magic, and maybe let you DM decide if its tied to a deity, and let them have fun with selecting which, depending on your characters actions. Also I can only think that a Freedom Fighter will be a nightmare if you're going to have them fight everyone who has any shred of authority, or has an elven slave, so that's all dependent on you and the world you play in.
im thinking like a general destine of societies that enslave elves ... but would only be moved to violence to protect an elf slave from physical violence .... otherwise it would be more political trying to build an army of slaves ...
If you go the political route than I'd say go Oath of Conquest, but if your going with moved to violence to protect, than maybe Oath of the Ancients can work, but again I'd talk to your DM and see what ideas the two of you can come up with.
You also have to be careful about how your character fits into an adventuring party, assuming this game is using the typical adventuring format rather than a ragtag rebellion. Why is this freedom fighter out adventuring when they could be fighting the power? Why would an adventuring party want to take the risk of harbouring someone actively antagonizing the crown?
im thinking more like ... recruiting elves and sending them back to a stronghold from all around the land .... His personal goal will be saving and recruiting but that will require lots of travel.
Most DMs should go for this like a shot as it (a) gives them one hell of a plot hook to draw the adventurers into things and (b) gives them the opportunity to get some inter-character (not inter-player, that's destructive) conflicts set up. And it gives you as a player plenty of chances to grab inspiration as well!
On the other hand if your DM is more old school, adversarial or have got their own story to tell it might go down like a lead balloon. Have a talk with them and see if they sound like they'll make it interesting for your character.
Oath of Devotion can work because he may be saving the lesser folk and protecting them from the oppressive standings of their society
Oath of Vengeance could work if the society is evil, and you declare the ones who run it to be your sworn enemy.
Oath of Redemption could work as a peaceful revolutionary (think Ghandi), who wishes to change the world around him to be more accepting and peaceful.
Oath of the Ancients is more about protecting all the happiness in the world, and less so caring about governmental issues, though it still could work.
Oath of the Crown might be too law abiding for your concept.
and Oath of Conquest wouldn’t work because it’s all about subjugation, shattering willpower, and being the most powerful in the world. (This is unless your character is super evil, in which case he might not even care about the elves anyway).
