Sometimes a Nat 1 tells a better story than a Nat 20 ever could.
Toren was born to a moderately well off merchant family, of which he was the eldest son. As he grew older and began to help out more, he began to see that the life he lived was no more than a facade. His father hid his financial troubles from the family, all while spending as though he had limitless money. Eventually, Toren began to become the primary breadwinner for the family, making money from odd jobs. He took up a life of crime to keep his family's heads above the water, but even that was not enough once his little sister caught ill with a mysterious disease.
No doctor seemed able to cure her, but they still charged Toren and his family exorbitant fees to see her. Wandering the town one night, looking for any easy marks that he might take a fat purse off of, Toren found himself standing in front of a seemingly abandoned warehouse. Hearing voices from inside, he crept in through a second story window, his curiosity getting the better of him.
Once inside, he saw what appeared to be a circle of mages summoning an angelic figure, which stood tall in the middle of arcane inscriptions. Thoroughly out of his league, Toren went to take his leave, but lost his footing while crawling on a ceiling support. He fell into the middle of the mages' circle, knocking over candles and destroying finely drawn chalk lines. As the mages looked at him in astonishment and began to reach for him, there was a flash of white light and everything went black.
Toren awoke buried underneath several beams and wooden panels, with no sign of the mages in sight. He pushed his way out of the rubble of the former warehouse and returned home, feeling strangely empowered as well as being completely unharmed. After arriving home and spending some time caring for his sister, she made a miraculous recovery, as though his presence had healed her. *Recruitment into the Institute commences here*
Toren believes that he killed or damaged the celestial that he saw earlier and that his powers are essentially the stolen abilities of the angel. He feels moderate/severe guilt over what he did, and tries to atone for it by living an upright life so that he hopefully doesn't get smited by the angel when it regains its powers.
What Toren doesn't know is that the angel brought him there that night because it was being forcibly summoned for the mages to siphon its power for some nefarious purpose. The angel sensed his "good" soul and telepathically orchestrated the events that led to it being freed and Toren getting his powers. The angel's essence was still dispersed by the interruption of the summoning ritual, but the energy that would have gone to *generic evil plan* went to Toren instead.

Reason for playing: to have fun! Isn’t that why we’re all here?
Backstory:
Backround: Urchin
FigDiddly was born from 2 very poor deep gnomes, who were very greedy. They’d do anything to have more money and power. So after FigDiddly was born, they attempted to sacrifice him to a Hag. This Hag would have eaten him, but before she cursed him with a mark on his forehead that would blow when performing magic, in the shape of an H made of stars. Just before the ritual was complete, a paladin came to save him, and killed the 2 parents, and injured the Hag. This paladin raised him, and explained when he grew up that she was a paladin of Vengeance, taking her revenge on people with Eldritch powers. But recently, FigDiddily, even though being trained by the paladin in the ways of self defense and focus, has recently had random bursts of cantrips. He has controlled them for now, but she is sending FigDiddly to Dumat’s to explain this.
Aura's Childhood wasn't all that memorable, she was a loner child, who didn't waste a lot of time talking to anyone, but during her teenage years, a lot changed. She was accepted into a monastery she didn't even know that they were thinking about accepting her, but she was still happy there, because there was one resorce in there that appeared in multiples, books. She passed her early teenage years, studying and studying, all for the sake of learning, not only that, she also learned all the skills passed down to all monks at the monastery.
One day, as she was hitting the late teenage years, a strange calling pulled her into the woods. She followed that feeling, which she discovered was coming from a creature she had never seen. Suddendly everything went hazy, and the last thing she knew, she was back at the spot where she met the creature, but something felt different.
She passed the next few days going back to that spot every day, hoping to one day understand what happened, and what made she feel so different, until one time, she found the creature. It was a beast, an animal of some kind, but she was surprised when she discovered it could talk. It explained to her what happened, and what was the purpose of that, that was also when she discovered her druidic abilities, but once the conversation was over, she still wanted to know more, and that's the motivation leading her to search for Dumat's.
(I promise this is more flexible than it seems. If anything here is a problem to the overall plot, I WILL change it, and I have no fear about any of that.)

Reason(s) for Playing D&D: I discovered the game a few years ago, and from start it already excited me. I play the game for all the three pillars the game has to offer, I like to role play an interesting character, I like to get into the adventure and explore what the world has to offer, and I still have a lot of fun creating strategies of battle and the epic scenes they can offer.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.

What are we doing for starting gear?
Starting gear yes, weapons no. NO magic items. Oh, EVERYONE needs an arcane focus!!
Sometimes a Nat 1 tells a better story than a Nat 20 ever could.
Wait, no weapons? So I have to take away my Sickle and Darts? Aww.
Also I noticed like 90% of you choose gnome. How attached are you to that race choice?
Sometimes a Nat 1 tells a better story than a Nat 20 ever could.
I only see 2 gnomes. Plus, magic campaigns call for gnomes always.
