Since I find myself with a lot more free time for the next six weeks, I wanted to try and run an Eberron campaign, a setting I haven't played around with much before. I'm looking for 4 -5 players.
Your characters will start in the city of Varna in the Eldeen Reaches. You work for the Varna Free Post, the Reaches' first true newspaper dedicated to this new nation borne out of the last war. Depending on your point of view, it is either a gutter press tabloid dedicated to pushing the Reaches into open war with Aundair, or the only place to get real news about what's happening in the Reaches without the biases of other papers. Either way, for you and your colleagues, its a living. Your editor has asked you to look into a series of animal attacks against a druid circle in the Wolfwood near the town of Havenglen.
Characters start at level 1. Roll for stats, equipment is standard. All UA/CR content is okay except homebrew. If there's a concept you have in mind you really want to try, send me a PM.
In your application, include the following details:
Name:

For the role at the newspaper, be creative! Your character can be a troubleshooter who gets the paper's staff out of tight situations, a fixer with connections to the black market and/or the Dragonmarked Houses, a fast-talking face-leaning reporter, a cartoonist, illustrator or photographer, or anything that makes sense.
I'll leave this open until tomorrow afternoon. Let me know if you have any questions in the meantime. Very excited to have a go in this new world!
I'll roll the stats and see where the creativity takes me from there.
But.. stats - would it be with re-rolling 1s once or always or not at all?

Name: Hisafris "Peace" Hiran
Race: Tiefling
Class/Background: Paladin/ Acolyte
Role at the Varna Free Post: Human/Public Relations. Look, The Post runs into its share of issues with image and with its employees. There are a ton of strong personalities working here. Peace's job is just to keep them in line and prevent them (and more importantly the company) out of the courts.
Backstory: Peace spent a huge majority of his life working at the temple of Dol Arrah, trying to keep the peace in the city, by force if he had to. That's past him now, as he's aged past his prime. He retired from the temple and now has been working to maintain the peace at the Post for four years... And it's less relaxing than he honestly thought it would be.
Okay, this looks absolutely delightful -- suddenly can't believe I've never played a D&D character working at a newspaper. I'll go ahead and roll stats and then fill all the details in once that's done:
Ability scores: 141310171311
Name: Rowan Dagmar
Race: Human (variant)
Class/Background: Druid/Cloistered Scholar
Role at the Varna Free Post: Photographer -- technically, she's supposed to take pictures of whatever relevant story she's assigned, but going through her camera roll tends to result in about 900 nature shots, regardless of the story. At least once she's convinced to take the photographs she's supposed to be taking, they're nice ...
Backstory: She comes from a long line of scholars, committed to learning -- it's why she was sent to an institution to become a master of all kinds of knowledge. But, tradition or not, she found the whole thing boring beyond measure ... at least, right up until the moment she discovered the organization was involved in some very, very black market dealings. Unfortunately, her eavesdropping was not nearly quiet enough; after a harrowing escape, she ran, and kept running -- and only stopped for this job at the newspaper, at which she's been using a false name, but also having an absolutely fantastic time. Her job isn't studying history anymore; she gets to take pictures and, you know, lay in the grass. (That may not actually technically be a part of her job, but shh.)
Role: Rhona is a handyman. If something breaks or needs repairs, she'll do her best to get it back in working order. Or at least make it work long enough until a replacement can be bought. She does do repairs for other businesses, so occasionally hears some rumors that the Press can investigate.
Backstory: The Gallagher family has lived in the Eldeen Reaches since Rhona's grandmother settled in the region. Rhona spent much of her early life in the workshop her family runs. At first, it was expected that she would also take up an artisan trade, and even began to train under an artificer. However, she was rather good at breaking anything she touched, along with not being too interested in that kind of magic. After breaking one too many things, Rhona started to learn how to fix them, if only to avoid another scolding. It took some time, but it was something that she was able to become rather skilled at. Eventually, she decided to travel to Varna, to make her own name and meet new people. She spends most of her time as a handyman for hire, but often spends her time reading or entertaining others.
Role is as a kind of handyman, janitor, layabout. Mostly they think he’s a bit crazy but harmless so find excuses to throw him an odd coin or two.
background:
The tall, gaunt, elderly man known as Maelfearance mostly haunts the streets of town during the nighttime hours, not interacting overly much with most. People are put off by the fact that the man wears shackles and a tattered robe and has a habit of having side conversations with. so he claims, the ghosts of those long past. For his part, Maelfearance has little use for the living, seemingly satisfied with the squalid life he lives and the company of spirits and ghosts. The odd occasion when he does yearn for a bite to eat or a drink of ale, Maelfearance has a habit of sharing a juicy bit of information with just the right person to earn a gold piece or two... Information nobody could possibly know, but spirits. When he is engaged in conversation, Maelfearance proves to be intelligent and, on occasion, even charming. But the fact that he believes he can talk to the dead, that he yearns to one day gain the power to raise the dead, specifically his long dead wife, is enough for most people to keep such conversations short...
OTHER
Maelfearance does not seem to age, always appearing as an emaciated wretch in the later years of life. He has vitality and power surpassing his appearance though. Maelfearance wears shackles he claims he was impisoned with years ago. Upon inspection one can see each link connected to them is etched with a fine, flowery but unknown markings. Maelfearance randomly insists these are spells he has been learning, the names enemies or poetry his has written to his undead wife which he intends to one day recite to her. Maelfearance refuses to change out of his tattered robes. He insists they are a symbol of the position he once had. Maelfearance commonly spends his nights in cemeteries amongst the graves. He is used to living a life of squalor and feels closer to his loved ones there. Maelfearance commonly talks to his long dead family, primarily his wife, as if they were besides him and carrying on a conversation with him. He insists he talks to their restless spirits which advise him and urge him on to further power so he can raise them up from life... But most think he is merely nutters.
Role at the Varna Free Post: He is good at getting big scoop and finding dirt on people, he used to be a private investegator.
Backstory: Markoth is a human who has a talent for gaining and loosing money, he loves to gamble and one day he sadly lost his soul to a fiend, but he got magic in return, who someones gets assiged work by the devil, usually to handle contract with other mortals. He have been a private investigator for alot of his life, but some time back he lost his partner sp now he is trying something new.
Class/Background: Wizard/Sage (Plan on going into Psionics)
Role at the Varna Free Post: Lokethos is primarily an information gatherer at the Varna Free Post. He's always been very interested in matters dealing with the mind, and thus uses his magic to take a deeper look into it. He uses the magic he has learned to charm people to learn what they know, and plans to delve even deeper than just tricks to charm them. Lokethos looks to gain insights deep into their minds, more than they would be willing to reveal aloud even whilst under the effects of his charms, to uncover the truth of all matters he is sent to investigate. In addition to his magical prowess to discover information, he is occasionally used to translate other texts into common through use of his Comprehend Languages spell.
Backstory: Lokethos, much like his ancestors before him, was raised to be a mage from a very young age. As for most Tieflings in Eberron, arcane knowledge means power, and the case remains the same for Lokethos. He was rather distant from his parents, as the majority of their time spent with him was to teach him some arcane spell or another. He went to a mage academy when he was of proper age, but was eventually kicked out for his unsanctioned charms and tricks. They intended to teach about the proper usage of spells in defense of self and others, and not to enchant others or muddle with their minds. Lokethos didn't stop, however, as he believed that in order to gain true power and knowledge, you've got to use all the tricks at your disposal. After being shut out of the academy, he searched for a mage to take him on as an apprentice, but none were to be found. Turns out, most wizards don't like a dropout as their protege. Dismayed, Lokethos realized he would need to get a real job in order to stay afloat in the world, and that's when he came across the Varna Free Post. There, he was hired for his magical prowess (as limited as it may be for a 1st level Wizard), and ever since he's been working contentedly with them, in a place where his magic is seen not as an intrusion but as a tool to help find the truth.
Role at the Varna Free Post: "Errand boy" in the office, bodyguard in the field
Backstory: Zeenon was built and employed by human military. His strength was offense, cutting down enemies before they could strike back. He had a very good track record until the military went up against a trio of giants who were terrorizing a local city. During the battle, Zeenon took a great deal of damage, which almost scrapped him. He was able to be put back together, but the damage he took has altered his computing capabilities considerably. He can no longer serve in the military. The owner of the Varna Free Post bought Zeenon at auction, being assured the warforged would require no compensation; only housing and upkeep. Zeenon follows directions well, but has a hard time coming up with good ideas on his own beyond the narrow field of completing assigned tasks. But as long as those he is accompanying know how to give commands, he follows the orders well and is talented in many respects. When left to his own devices, he acts like a mentally challenged child. His weirdest quirk is his imaginary friend, Zeetin.
Class/Background: Bard (eventually college of Lore), Sage
Role at the Varna Free Post: Fact check/archivist
Backstory: Jed is a bookworm among bookworms. Spending much of his time in the dark dusty archive of The Post. He comes up every so often to deliver a massive about a misquote or inaccuracy, but is very seldom seen outside the building.
Nevitash is bent on finding the truth. Any truth. All truth. He spent years working on honing his ability to become more unified with the Quori spirit within, and he has come so close... its now time for a test of fire. The newspaper! An excellent cover for a hero in disguise, no one would suspect it as merely a cover for his vigilante justice. All he needs is a pair of glasses.
I figure his body is manifesting powers and changes based on all his work trying to unite further with his spirit. It’s also made him a bit susceptible to the emotions of others. He falls in sync with others without meaning to.

Race: Protector Aasimar
Class/Background: Barbarian/Noble
Role at the Varna Free Post: Bodyguard/ticket to the noble parties/equipment mule
Backstory: Lucas is the ninth child of the noble house of Micirin, so his family doesn’t really care what he does, even if they wish he would do more with his life than work for what they call a piece of extra scrap paper called the Varna Free Post. Lucas applied to work there hearing they allowed anyone to guard the journalists regardless of status. Being the ninth son of a noble household is very boring, so he signed up, hoping they would take him. While they were probably expecting more street rats than noble-borns, they couldn’t really prevent Lucas from hiring on, especially when he told them he could get people into noble parties as his guests. That, coupled with his fighting abilities, allowed Lucas a position to protect people on jobs for the paper. When on missions, he often carries the equipment required for the mission to let others travel more easily. In the office, he’s usually the source the reporter’s come to for news and gossip about what the nobles are up to. If he doesn’t know, he can usually find out with a few questions from the biggest gossip in the city, his mother.
