I just went back to see the wording on the critical hit variant rules shown in the DMG, only to find that the content appears to have been removed from the digital version. I even did a general search of D&D Beyond (https://www.dndbeyond.com/search?q=critical hits) and still can't find the rules.
Am I missing something?

Dang, I guess I must be transposing the information from somewhere. My DMG physical copy is over in Iceland, getting signed by one of my online players, otherwise I would have checked there before bothering the community with this. no content has been removed from the Dungeon Master's Guide.
I just double checked against my physical copy, and there are no variant rules presented for critical hits.
Could you be thinking of these sections, that talk about how to handle Critical Hits?
