I cant seem to find a thread that addresses this, so ill start.
I have a character that dual wields a battleaxe and a warhammer. I was able to make an extra attack with the warhammer using a bonus action. It seems that the new rules for twf demand one of them has to be light. Is this true? Theres no more dervish, dual wielding two normal weapons type of play? As far as I can tell with the rules, all the dual wielding stuff comes explicitly from the light property. Anyone got any ideas?

No, the new rules demand BOTH of them have to be light, The Dual Wielder Feat lets the weapon used for it's bonus action attack be any melee weapon that lacks the two-handed property but this is a separate attack too that of the light property.
Rules discussions aside, I want to talk about what it means thematically: After also being initially confused, I now feel that I think I get what they are going for, and I now kinda like it.
The thing that always distinguished two-weapon fighting was that you get an extra attack. That basically means you are quick with your light weapons.
The 2014 Dual Wielder Feat feels kinda inconsistent with that theme. It basically said "Sure your attacks are quick, but aren't you sick of attacking with those toothpicks? Here, take this feat so you can use some real weapons!" It feels pessimistic, like a feat you need to take to make up for a disability, and that's kinda sour.
The 2024 Dual Wielder Feat feels more like it celebrates quick attacks with light weapons. It basically says "Isn't having more fast attacks awesome? Here, have another one!" Sure, it also allows the bonus attack to be with a non-light weapon (if you can find a way to efficiently juggle it in), but the main meat of the feat is "MORE ATTACKS! MORE ATTACKS! YAY!" and that feels much more on-theme for two weapon fighting, in my opinion.
I agree with jl8e. Ask if you can forego your mastery property on one attack in exchange for using two non-light weapons. That's what the restriction that one of them be Light is trying to accomplish.

This was discussed recently in two threads (1, 2). Short answer: yes, that's how it works now, it's probably due to the addition of Weapon Mastery.

I get what youre going for and how it feels. If youre going to be twf and using light weapons, it feels good.
But my power fantasy is using two normal sized weapons. (In this case Battleaxe and warhammer)
So with no rules in place, im still ending up using the old 2014 twf rules in order to facilitate this. Mix and matching rulesets feels wierd
Talk to your GM; they'll likely be willing to work something out.
