So I was creating a new bard character and, when I got to the equipment, the first thing I had to choose was a main weapon out of:
(a) a rapier, (b) a longsword, or (c) any simple weapon
Since it didn't specify a simple melee weapon, I figured that a ranged weapon such as a shortbow or light crossbow would be fine. However, it didn't say anything about starting with the required ammunition. So it sounds like if this character does start with a simple ranged weapon, it will essentially be like a gun with no bullets.
Is that what would actually happen, is there something somewhere that says how much ammo the character would get in such a situation, or would the character simply not be allowed to start with a simple ranged weapon?
If you go by all of the other examples where ranged weapons are given as a choice, the amount of ammunition is included. This would imply that your choice is a simple melee weapon.

There aren't any rules that give you ammo to go with the weapon, but you could use the gold you get from your background to buy ammo.
As written, I believe this is correct. Given that the standard load of 20 arrows/bolts is just 1gp, houseruling to give the player starting ammo for free isn't gonna break anything, I'm guessing.

It's a slippery slope - the next thing you know, they'll want a free quiver to put those arrows in, rather than just tucking them all into their pockets! ;)
