So I have a plan to set up a bunch of bullets enchanted with Continual flame to then toss into rooms of enemies and cast either Fireworks or Smoke from that endless fire source, it's also a flaming ball so it should attract peoples attention to look at it before it blinds them. However, I would have to look at the flame source to cast the spell, so I was wondering if I as the caster am immune to the blinding, or is it a double edged sword that is pretty useless? It doesn't make sense to have to see it to cast on it but then blind yourself. But if that's the case, would the smoke also not affect me? (Other than obscuring my vision of course)
You're talking about an improvised smoke bomb or flash bang in a sense. Neither of those objects can be controlled to target specific victims. When lobbing tear gas, smoke bombs, or flash bangs the persons who know what's going on will have a second or 3 to retreat. If you're looking to have the effect happen immediately, then you'll be victim to your own devices, if you have a fuse, then you'll have that time to remove yourself from its influence, potentially.
Pyrotechnics can only target an area of nonmagical flame. The flame from Continual Flame is magical. And yes, the caster has to make the saving throw if they're within 10 feet of the fireworks. The spell has a range of 60 feet so just get some distance from the flame you're targeting.
The smoke option just creates a heavily obscured area.
