I've read the dmg and phb almost memorized both. I'm not seeing a rule stating you can't take as many as you want so long as your meet the prerequisites for said feats.
Feats are an optional rule - the Player's Handbook states that, if your DM allows, you can take a feat instead of an ASI (Ability Score Increase) when your class qualifies for one of those.
The character sheet does let you add extra feats in case your DM lets you add extra feats, but you are only prompted to pick a feat or ASI every 4 class levels. You can also add any amount of spells, items, or money, but that doesn't mean you can just do it without your DM approving it.

Well gear earned or taken is supposed to be malleable.
Learned techniques, unless your hit with amnesia never vanish.

But you can't just find a legendary magic item or a stack of 1000 platinum pieces any more than you can just learn a feat. All of those things are dependant on the progression of the campaign.
Just because you can do something on the character sheet doesn't mean you are supposed to.
That much were clear on. How would anyone carry all that coinage? Bags of holding can only carry so much. Though is your dm is caring about encumbrance at all?
You're treating the character sheet like it defines the rules, which is not and never has been the case. You can write whatever you like on a physical paper character sheet, but that doesn't make it valid within the rules, both of the book and of your DM.
Feats exist in the game only if the DM allows them.
Feats can (normally) only be acquired when a character would normally receive an ASI, and are a direct replacement for that feature
i.e., if your DM allows feats, at level 4 you could choose to take either the +2 (or +1/+1) attributes or one feat that you meet the prerequisites for.
If your DM also allows Variant Human as a playable race, then you get one free feat at creation as that race's feature.
Feats can be earned in game if your DM decides to grant it to you. Most often, this is done as a replacement for a quest reward (like completing a major arc of the campaign, or a chain of related quests), or as a result of in game "downtime" activities requiring a player to find someone in game that can train the character, and then spend a large amount of money and time before actually mastering the feat (I think the guidelines recommend requiring an average of something like 6 months devoted to training). Good RP helps a lot in this regard.

+1 for you having the Keen Mind and/or Observant feats :D
You don't know what fear is until you've witnessed a drunk bird divebombing you while carrying a screaming Kobold throwing fire anywhere and everywhere.
Does anyone know how to use the character builder to record a feat that was granted by the DM through "training", not a feat taken as a variant or absent an ability increase upon leveling? see DMG 231 Training.
[EDIT] OOPS! -- I found it. Right there at the bottom of the character sheet after building is complete. In the "Features and Traits" section | Feats | Manage Feats
[EDIT] My workaround at present is to go back to the spot where I would have chosen ability score / feat, and pick "feat" instead, and then just adding the +2 ability score modifiers into the override score section of the ability scores.
Just need clarification.

Am I miss reading the rules at play?

"We got this, no problem! I'll take the twenty on the left - you guys handle the one on the right!"🔊
That in itself says its an optional rule, nothing iron clad.
Guess I'm way to used too 2'ed and 3rd edition rules that were alot more clear cut.
The current edition of Dungeons & Dragons has taken an approach of offering more options and allowing more flexibility.

I'm noticing that, its nice but a little more directive clarity is needed. Just a little tweak will do.
As is, it can be interpreted we players can go gung hu so long as the prerequisites are met.
It gives a small advantage to intelligent experienced players and leaves those new to the game a little perplexed.
Once every four levels isn't exactly "gung ho".

That rule is optional.
That's why I'm asking for clarification.
No, feats existing is optional. If feats exist, they only are able to be gained when you get an Ability Score improvement, every 4 levels.

Haven’t used this account in forever. Still a big fan of crawling claws.
Ok i see your point.
The online char creator here doesn't have them locked down or marked to show the rule or optional aspect of it.
That's why I'm having the question in the first place. Coding error i guess!

"...feats are special options you can choose instead of increasing your ability scores as you gain levels. Your DM decides whether these options are available in a campaign."
Seems pretty clear to me that Feats themselves are the optional rule, not the fact that they can be chosen instead of an ASI.

1000 coins is 20 lb and less than a square foot of space. A bag of holding can carry that no problem.
It's 100% clear cut.
