As the title says, wondering if you can Multiclass into the same class you started as in order to gain Sub-Class benefits. Yes, I am aware that this is probably a terrible idea, but there does seem to be a handful of instances where it could be useful. For example, it could be useful to take 1 level in the Draconic Bloodline perhaps, in order to gain the permanent 13+Dex AC and a +1 to health each level, as well as whichever other Sorcerous Origin you choose to take. Curious as to if it's possible or not, or more just up to the DM's discretion. Don't see anything that would prevent this.
It's definitely not possible on beyond here. You would have to multi class into same as starting and ìt just wont allow it. I'm sure SOMEWHERE it probably is in black and white but idk where
As mentioned, DM's can allow just about anything. If I was the DM, I'd say no. I think the rules are pretty clear:
Multiclassing allows you to gain levels in multiple classes. Doing so lets you mix the abilities of those classes to realize a character concept that might not be reflected in one of the standard class options. With this rule, you have the option of gaining a level in a new class whenever you advance in level, instead of gaining a level in your current class...
You can create feats that copy subclass features. Require them to be taken in order and at a level above when the feature is available to that subclass.
RAW, no. If I were DMing I would probably at least allow it as if it were a new class unless I foresaw particular problems coming. I don't think any of the players I play with would be willing to take that deal as losing out on all the benefits of going up in their main class will almost always outweigh the benefits of a second subclass.
As for letting them pick up the lvl 1 benefits of a different subclass instead of the next benefits of their own, I might possibly allow it, but it would be on a strict case by case basis.
I can see this getting weird if a fighter says they are going to take fighter repeatedly for multiple fighting styles, or repeatedly taking warlock for multiple pacts, or repeatedly taking cleric with multiple domains
Not every class gets their fancy feature at level 3
You're also not going to get all the cool stuff from a new class prior to picking a subclass, because you'll already have that stuff. A Rogue who multi's into Rogue again will pay x2 EXP and won't get Sneak Attack again, because they already have it. So they'll spend early levels just getting more HP and not getting any new features or getting better at much of anything.
I would not allow it, and don't see the rules allowing it either. Usually the subclasses of the same class would fit much better together than those of other classes.
In addition you would be able to do crazy stuff like getting sneak attack 4 levels in a row by multiclassing rogue/rogue/rogue/rogue. (As far as i understand sneak attack would stack with itself just like Fighting style does).
Subclasses aren't designed to be chopped up and have their parts mixed and matched. They offer a mix of roleplaying, exploration and combat benefits as a whole package, and some features might rely on lower level features to work.

Why would it stack? You're talking about something the rules do not allow for, so there's no real sense in which this thing that you'd be houseruling 'would' work one way or the other. If you allowed this, another perfectly acceptable interpretation would be, each time you get a new level 1 in rogue, you'd get...the exact same abilities you got last time. Not more often, just the same abilities. The Sneak Attack feature--the feature by that specific name, allows you extra damage "once per turn". If you multi into Rogue again, you get the same feature by the same name. Which would still allow extra damage once per turn, no more. That's the way that seems reasonable to me. Hence my comment that you'd just be wasting your time not getting anything new until you reached subclass levels.
yeah it'd be rather useless i would think. you could always build a custom sub-class, and pull feats from the other sub-classes in your class. this seems like the safest route. this is also considering your DM is authoring this new sub-class and ensuring balance.

You must choose a new class to gain a level in.
Yup, as standard this is not allowed.
As with all D&D rules, you can always override that with a house rule, but this isn't supported within D&D Beyond character tools.

Looking for new subclasses, spells, magic items, feats, and races? Opinions welcome :)
