I am looking for a link to a fairly complete list of all magic items and their value in gold. I understand the concept of DM discretion on trading, buying, finding...but it does not help when I am thinking of ways to convince a team mate that they would rather have other items than the one item the entire group has that should be with a character (me) that Wisdom is their main ability...(Ion Stone of Insight) I did not even get a chance to say: "Um, hey that would be very useful to my Cleric and ultimately all of us..."
So I am also looking for advice if you want to post link you can ignore the rest:
Yes in some ways I am making humor of the situation. But I am 8th level and every magic item that has been found has gone to other characters.. (mostly logical choices) The Ioun Stone was the first one that really hurt and not logical...the only items that come to me are healing scrolls, or unwanted items. Like a suit of Mariners armor, yay. I can swim and not drown. My only hope is that the player with the stone falls in water, begins to drown and I save him and he rewards me with the Ioun Stone.
And since I am sure it is a question. Aside from a few potions and scrolls, our party has found a Bag of tricks (Barbarian got), Staff of the Adder (Druid got), Spear of Lightning (I don't really know what it is Pathfinder magic item? Ranger got it), Ioun stone (Warlock got), Two handed +2 sword (I really fought for this one but our Fighter got it. Just kidding), and me Mariners armor...
I rolled a 20 on Performance so please skip the comments that point out my wining. Just looking for suggestions on how I could convince our team that the Stone would be better suited for me. I my only idea is to play character and tell the Warlock that I will do everything in my power to side with him on future magic items if he would trade...or lend or whatever. Thank you!
I'm not sure that a list of the value of each item would help on this. Can you explain why you think this would help and we may be able to assist.
Also, can you let us know how the discussion went around the Warlock gaining the Ioun Stone of Insight rather than your character? As I am sure you know, wisdom is isn't a key stat for Warlocks, but it sounds like there was a compelling reason given?
Dungeon Master's Guide, page 135 (or here) has values attached to item rarities, although the latter is more common in eyeballing the relative value between two items.
But I'll agree with Stormknight - I see no reason for the Warlock to get a wisdom bonus instead of the cleric, regardless of rarity or value, unless the cleric's wisdom is already 20 (the ioun stone doesn't improve it beyond that value).
I guess that what I'm saying is... I am not certain if you should bring this issue to the characters (which is usually preferable), or to the players and DM.
Thanks for the advice. Our Warlock likes to cast detect magic every where, which is not a bad thing but it leads to moments of him finding things after a boss battle, that he runs up and checks the items, and not always a discussion takes place about who should get the items. In this case it was more of a random event that he picked up the Ioun stone and the DM was flexible in letting him know what it did. I did not know what it was until he read it out loud. I mentioned in that moment it would be good for my character but I am not going to lie, in the excitement of finding something like that he thought of the ability gain, boosting his character stat regardless of it being his main stat. No one else seemed to care to agree with me. So I was too meek. I actually spoke to him yesterday, after realizing that I was just being insecure and did not present a good case to him so I did that yesterday and he came around a bit. Pretty sure I will have it tomorrow.
I also wanted the values of the magic items in gold as I know there is an actual list kicking around somewhere on line but can not find it. Failed my investigation check. Thank you for all other advice. You both have replied to several of my questions. Love this site. Only been playing for 9 months after a 30 year hiatus, so I am happily picking up steam and there is no greater day than Thursday nights from 7-10:30 for me! I count the minutes now waiting for tomorrow.
Sounds like there's no actual problem, then. Character found something shiny and put it on without much discussion. Happens all the time (especially with Rogues...) Resolving this in-character is usually the best course of action, and leads to RP that fleshes out the characters more. :)
The page (and link) I mentioned do have that table with actual gp values attached to item rarities. Give it a look if you still can't find them. As far as I know, there are no gold values attached to specific items in 5th.
And being excited for the game's day is a good sign. Hold on to that game. :D
The rarities listed in the DMG are a bit, shall we say... wonky.
They really aren't any less "wonky" than those prices given in that pompously-named PDF, which are arbitrarily assigned or even skipped because "lol I don't like this item".
The prices in DMG and XGE are insane for a reason.
Default 5e assumes that "magic shops" pretty much won't exist, and even goes on to suggest that potions and the like be bought at alchemist's shops instead.
From the DMG, page 135: Unless you decide your campaign works otherwise, most magic items are so rare that they aren't available for purchase.
and further: If your campaign allows for trade-in magic items, rarity can also help you set prices for them. As the DM, you determine the value of an individual magic item based on its rarity. Suggested values are provided in the Magic Item Rarity table.
DMG and XGE even state that to sell and buy items you basically have to shell out up to 100gp just to find a "collector" to sell or buy from.

For example, Ioun Stone of Insight is very rare, while mariner's armor is uncommon.
