I believe that's how the spell is supposed to work. You cast it and, so long as you maintain concentration, can then "use a bonus action to cause one creature in the aura (including you) to regain 2d6 hit points." The act of casting it has no effect other than allowing you to use your bonus action in a different way.
That isn’t what the OP is asking. Aura of Vitality is an action to cast and a bonus action to activate once cast. They aren’t swapping, they are using both in the first turn
If I use my main action to cast AoV, can I then use a bonus action in that same turn to use it to heal?

Thanks! Just wanted to make sure I understood it correctly and there wasn't some rule against using the spell in the same turn.

No - you can't swap an action for a bonus action.
