So we fought a black dragon and actually won! Before it's lair imploded basically we got a round to look and loot. My roll was fantastic. I now have a Dancing Sword, longsword. I am not proficient with a longsword. Can I use this item? Not sure it's my characters style... I may sell it, trade it or let a different party member use it. Looking for thoughts. Thanks!!
Sounds like a good opportunity to roleplay a bit of horsetrading. Unless youre an elf variant you wont have proficiency. If I were you I might see if there was a elf armor smith or magic trading post and see if you could grab something of a defensive nature like elven chain of ring/cloak/bracers of protection.

Hm. As a DM I'd be totally willing to retcon it on the spot and say "oh, sorry, I meant you find a dancing shortsword" or dagger, or something.
Give it to whomever in the party can make the best use of it. This helps you in the long run as it increases the overall power of the group.
Which subclass is your sorc?
