So I'm new to DMing / D&D in general. In the campaign I'm currently running, I've used / hinted at using enemies from the Shadowfell and might continue to use them. Before I do so, I don't know enough about the Shadowfell, how bad is it if bits of that world merged with the material plane? Current plan is that the Big bad is trying to go to the Shadowfell to avoid being prosecuted by the locals of the land and to have an seemingly endless supply of people to experiment on. In turn, is letting beings from the Shadowfell out. Would that be catastrophic lore wise?
Another question would be, are there any beings in the Shadowfell that would not be too fond of this taking place? I don't think Kelemvor would be too psyched, but I'm not sure if there'd be guardians of the sort that would basically go after my Big Bad?
There's lots of stuff in the Shadowfell that your big bad may have to account for. It's a bleak and desolate realm that is but an echo of the Prime Material Plane. There's a lot to read up on, and I recommend you start with the Forgotten Realms FANDOM Wiki. If you are looking for more official and updated information on the Shadowfell for 5th Edition, you may be interested in purchasing Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes, which has lore on the realm. The Dungeon Master's Guide also has some information and interesting mechanics to use for adventuring in the Shadowfell.
I was looking through some of the books and I did look at the Forgotten Realms Wiki, but I still don't have a good understand about how bad it would be. Like if Shadowfell took over a bit of land in the material plane, is it even comparable to infernals coming over? No matter how you paint it, it's bad but I don't wanna do something that would cause inevitables to come have a chat with Big Bad

I think that the Shadowfell and the Prime Material actually connecting would be worse in the end than if say the Abyss would connect. Not because of how bad it would be in itself, but remember that the Shadowfell is rather covert; it might not be obvious until it is too late to really deal with it. It might start as a sense of depression that sweeps through a village, after a foul wizard has desecrated their burial grounds without them knowing. Then, when they are lulled into inaction, the crops go bad and people get sick. Travelers start to actively avoid the region due to the disease spreading and there are rumours of the undead sweeping the land. Spectres and Wraiths start appearing to take over bodies and slay the living. At that point it would be difficult to contain. As soon as a couple of demons pop out, there is an instant response by the powers of Good (and perhaps even the Devils of the Nine Hells because of the Blood War, but I digress).
Eh, more like par for the course. Its not uncommon for people to crossover from the mortal world to the Shadowfell, or to the Feywild, along with a lot of existing gates. The only problem would be if you tried to connect to a Domain of Dread, as those are sort of prison-like places for their Lords. But an invasion from the Shadowfell has happened before in the past of some settings, so its not unheard of.

Other than the Raven Queen and the occasional Domain of Dread Lords, there's not a lot of details on the powers-that-be of the Shadowfell. Its going to be rather dependent upon the details. I mean, there's living people in the Shadowfell, not just undead. I don't think anyone is going to care about a Shadow Dragon other than the people the dragon starts eating.

A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one.

I do not think that the Raven Queen would like this person's actions, and she might send Shadar Kai to aid the party.
