While reading VGtM I came across a note on Flail Snails. It said that their shells have many uses, and their slime hardens to glass that is prizes by glassmakers (glassblowers?).
I decided I wanted to make creatures that are essentially noncombatants, but have interesting traits (like good milk, explosive eggs under the right conditions, ect.) I do not want to put these in the homebrew monsters section because we do not need to know their stats more than "they have higher than average intelligence," or "they are about the same as a hawk."
Here is an example. Feel free to use it.
RAVENSPEAKER
These creatures have roughly the same features as a normal raven, but they cannot caw, they can only mimic perfectly what other people have said. Ravenspeakers were created a long time ago from a pair of ravens who were playing with a kenku child (who had wings at that time), but while they were swooping and diving the child's wings disappeared, and it fell. The ravens attempted to slow it's fall, and by doing so became imbued with a portion of the curse.
These creatures are used by kenku and others as better messenger hawks, there are very few of them because their lack of a natural voice makes it almost impossible for them to get a mate. For this reason they are mostly bred in captivity and are almost extinct in the wild.
This plant grows in tropical and subtropical climates. It usually grows to about two feet tall and bears no fruit, it's seeds come during it's second year inside small red flowers that sprout from the top. The leaves are green ringed with red. The leaves and seeds can be used as flavor enhancers, while the roots are large and have medicinal properties, and can be used as a thickener for soup.
The problem is growing them. In addition to normal water and sunlight, each plant needs one cup of blood every week, or half a cup of it is under three weeks old, or it will become lethally poisonous.Any type of blood will do, even human. To make things worse, every time it comes into contact with blood it creates a fireball about 10 feet wide that is hot enough to kill most people (around 2d6, DC 10 dex save). Because of this, it is almost only bought by the rich.
Doze bush a normal looking bush the make yellow berries. the Berries glow slightly. If a creature touches the plant it releases a cloud of pollen that causes creatures to sleep. In feeds off the dreams and the psychic power they have. The berries can be made into a sleeping poison. It comes from the fae wild and can be found near fea crossings
Wisp flower (also known as witches bane) a light blue flower that glows in the dark. It looks like a line of flowers but in truth it is a underground vine that has flowers on the surface. It is known as wisps because when a creature approaches a flower the flower closes and then the creature sees the light of the next flower. They are known to grow towards places of magic.
if used in alchemy then you can make a portion of dark vision or detract magic.
I also like to come up with special magical uses for the feathers of fantastic beasts.
You use a special quill and write a letter. You clean the ink from the quill and speak a magic incantation. The letter is stored in the quill. The quill is transported to the recipient of the message. The recipient places a piece of paper on his desk, inks the quill and positions it near the top left corner of the paper. He speaks the magic phrase and the quill writes a copy of the same letter.
I always think stuff like that is fun.
Now the party finds a small, beautifully crafted box with some writing paper, ink, a fancy quill and a small note with some strange Elven(?) word written on it. ...
Maybe the quill has a whole map stored in it? Maybe it is able to write a scroll? Maybe it can do this same thing over and over until the message in the quill is reset?
The quill of Plutarch, or Herodotus, or Tacitus, or Livy, or Josephus, or Cato, or ...

Rot Oak a tree found in the shadow fell and places where the planes touch. It looks like a oak tree but it has no leaves and it’s bark is black it also has red sap which led to it being called a blood oak. It smells like rot and decay. The sap kills the plants around it. Despite it’s looks it is still alive it needs water and some sun and if you try you can grow one yourself. If you find a way to eat it safely then it taste like rot as well. The sap can be made into poisons
Fire Bats are subterranian bats that live near large banks of water and have a wingspan of around 2 feet and weigh around five pounds. There are two main tribes. The first is kind and benevolent, though maybe a little bit lofty. They like visitors and can speak Common. They like children especially and will often give them beautiful gifts from deep within the earth. The second tribe, on the other hand, is warlike and agressive and will often attack nearby settlements. They are dangerous. Don't provoke them.

These seem like creatures that should have statistics, this thread is for creatures and plants that are noncombatant and have strange quirks.
The Jaunayil is a desert dwelling lizard about 6" in length that uses teleportation magic to escape predators. The lizard can use it's reaction when it takes damage, provided the attacker did not score a critical hit, to teleport up to 20 feet away and take no damage.
One living lizard can provide a material component for any conjuration spell that costs 50gp or less, it will be consumed if the material would be. Having a cloak made from their cured skins gives you the power to teleport up to 20 feet as an action once per day, though because of their size it takes a great many to make a cloak for even a halfling.
There is an endangered creature of the bovine family found within the jungle of Chult (or somewhere else if you are not in the Forgotten Realms). It is prized highly because it's milk has strange and powerful healing properties, and its small size of about 2 1/2 feet makes it easy to transport. But it must eat jungle plants to survive, and if it is exposed to temperatures below the freezing point of water for more than 1 hour it will die.
They are kept by jungle dwelling Yuan-ti as sacrificial beasts and healers in battle, as long as the fighting is close to the jungle. Most barbaric tribes are afraid of the beasts and anyone who drinks their milk. They believe the milk has been cursed by evil spirits and anyone who consumes it will become an evil spirit on the next full moon.

Draconis Capsicum is a Tiny Dragon about the size of a crane fly they have red or black scales they are herbivorous. while docile thay are not without some danger as they produce incredibly strong concentrated flames that can be maintained for up to 30seconds this peculiar ability has however made them popular as a pocketable per with utility as a lighter.

I took your idea of the teleporting lizard and it added a lot of flavor to the overnight watch for the Kenku Rogue. Fun was had by all. :D
