Hi all, I have a homebrew campaign that I'm running and one of the plot devices they'll encounter is that at first level the party will be tricked into stealing something from a much more powerful NPC. I'd like that NPC to catch them but let them go with the understanding that at some point in the future, he'll be calling on the party to do a service for him.
What's the best way (spell, item, etc) for that NPC to be able to track the PCs and know where they are at any given time and/or be able to contact them to call them to him?
The Scrying spell can let you spy on people, Dream is a good spell for both communication, manipulation and just all around mind****ery. Sending can be used for communication, as can Telepathy. Locate Creature can be used for tracked if within a certain distance.
A warlock with Pack of the Chain and the right invocations can have an invisible imp track them.
You can send an Arcane Eye can be used to follow a party as they leave.

Cyb3rM1nd gave a pretty good list. Or, it’s an NPC and when they need to find the party they just find the party. They don’t have to follow the same rules or limitations as PC’s.
Also, just be careful the NPC “catches” the party in such a way as they don’t try to fight the NPC and get wiped out. Not all players like to be forced to surrender.
