Or say to your DM "if my dog dies, is there a way for me to put its soul warforged body as a companion?"
They should respond with something along the lines of "that sounds cool, you can do that if you gather X resources and take Y amount of time, and maybe pass an ability check with a difficulty of Z."
If you're looking for an ability in the actual rules of the game that does that specific thing, then yeah magic jar is probably your best bet, but remember, just because it's not covered in the book doesn't mean it's impossible.
As long as it's cool, and the DM agrees that it fits the lore of the character and the world, and they don't find it unbalanced or have any other objections to it, then there should be a way forward to doing that.
Not to mention BlackRazor, which is likely not to be easily converted to do what you desire.
In general, I would also allow any Cleric of Death Domain and Warlocks of the Fiend, Great Old Ones, Hexblade, Undead, or Undying, to do some kind of ritual or get some kind of special assignment to do the same.
Magic jar seems most appropriate, but that's some high-level magic and only admits a target of "self". Soul cage is also in the right domain, but can only target a humanoid. If I were a DM, I'd allow either to work with the added cost of some extra components to make the spells fit.
I have a idea of a character that has a dog as a companion. In some point os the backstory, they both get attacked and the dog gets baddly hurt.
The only way the character finds to save his companion dog is to transfer it's soul into a long time dead warforged/constructo he possesses.
The question is: How can this soul transfer happen? Is there a spell or a iten that allows this binding?
Thanks all in advance!
Great adventures to all!!
Well, since you are saying that this is part of your backstory and not a currently happening situation, it’s quite easy. Ask your DM, and if they say that it’s fine, then your backstory is as you described. How you get there can be whatever you and your DM work out.
You could go with a Battlesmith Artificer and say that your Steel Defender contains the soul of your dead dog. It's just flavor, and an Artificer seems like the kind of person who would put the soul into a robot instead of just necromancing the dead dog alive again.
Yas @ArntltheBest! Thats ecxaclly the ideia. But the character will be low level when the attack happens. So he couldn't put the soul himself... But yeah! You're spot on :D

How low level are we talking? Artificer gets their subclass at level 3. If it happens before that, you could "trap" the soul somehow and spend your days endeavoring to find a way to bring your puppy back, resulting int he Battlesmith subclass with your puppy Steel Defender.
This is all flavor, so you don't really need a mechanical way to keep your pooch's soul from going to heaven (as All Dogs Do).

Since it is backstory even if it happened before 1st level it could be that you already had an affinity to tinkering (which leads to artificer at level 1) and your strong connect to your dog allows you to “store” your dogs soul in a small mechanical device. If you are starting at 1st or 2nd level, and with permission of your DM, maybe the soul is kept in a tiny clockwork version of your dog (kind of like the Rock Gnome Tinker racial feature but permanent) and once you hit level 3 you transfer it to the steel defender.

I'd direct you to Magic Jar.

Soul stealing things I know of include:
Spells: Magic Jar, Soul Cage
Items: Ring of Mind Shielding.
Not to mention BlackRazor, which is likely not to be easily converted to do what you desire.

Thanks a lot!
Yeah, that makes perfectly sense.
I asked it to elaborate that bg history to the DM. Trying to make that event as smooth as possible to build the rest of the narrative upon the bg.
Appreciate your reply :)

Thanks for my next character idea. That's precious.

Cool! Glad you like it ChoirOfFire.
I'm still developing it. Open to any suggestions you find interesting ;)

I just like the idea of playing a character who's a dog. Not just any dog but the pet dog of another party member.
