I really like the different schools of magic and think building a character that only does one type of spells would be really cool and make story sense (e.g. an evocation physic that acts like the avatar, a sneaky criminal making deals with dying victims with necromancy). Which spellcasting class is best for being able to focus all your spells from one school?
Well the Wizard's Arcane Traditions from the PHB focus on each school of magic - the wizard then has additional abilities that focus on that tradition.
Probably Wizard. While a cool idea, I think it would get a little hard to do long term because there are just some really great spells in other schools that you would have to forgo.
I'd agree with Wizard being the obvious choice what with the different Arcane Traditions basically being school specializations.
Another non-optimal option would be Cleric and select a domain that most closely represents that option. But, I'd say the only school that cleric might be a close option would be necromancy with the Grave Domain from Unearthed Arcana, but even then, that is more about stopping death than actually controlling it (so you're probably still better off with a wizard)
For Evocation, you could select sorcerer as most of the evocation spells are available to them and you could use your metamagic to better control the damage dealing aspects. And you can restore spells more easily using sorcery points instead of waiting for a short rest via Arcane Recovery. Of course, at higher levels, Wizard outshines them even in that as they are able to restore up to 6th level spells (as opposed to the Sorcerer which is only up to 5th level)
For everything else, you're basically looking wizard all the way, no contest.
“It is a better world. A place where we are responsible for our actions, where we can be kind to one another because we want to and because it is the right thing to do instead of being frightened into behaving by the threat of divine punishment.” ― Oramis, Eldest by Christopher Paolini.
Sorcerer's with Subtle and Heighten Spells make very good enchantment school users, since they can deflect blame from their enchantments and make foes less likely to succeed the saving throw AND they want the charisma stat that gives you access to the skills you need to really satisfy the concept of a cha-mancer.

Wary the wizard who focuses on homebrew, for he can create nightmares that you wouldn't even dream of
