Hi! Just wondering about how the four arms would work for the Thri Kreen when as a player you multiattacked. I did a quick look over the monster stat block and the multiattack was four weapons. Would four attacks apply to the player as well?
In the UA version of the Thri Kreen race (for players) the extra two arms are listed as smaller and do not provide any additional attacks to the player. The bit below is an excerpt from the UA. Do not know if it will be changed at all before its final release.
Secondary Arms. You have two slightly smaller secondary arms below your primary pair of arms . The secondary arms function like your primary arms, with the following exceptions:
• You can use a secondary arm to wield a weapon that has the light property, but you can’t use a secondary arm to wield other kinds of weapons.
• You can’t wield a shield with a secondary arm .

It does say light weapons for the secondary arms. So you would use the rules of two weapon fighting I suppose
Exactly. It opens up the possibility of using Two Weapon fighting with a two-handed weapon/one-handed weapon combo OR using two one-handed weapons and a shield at the same time, but does not increase the total number of attacks you get beyond normal.

I think a Thri-Kreen half-caster with Dual Wielder could be fun. You get to play a sword and board build, but also have a dagger in a secondary arm so you can attack an additional time with your bonus action and the other secondary arm can be kept open for performing the somatic components of your spellcasting without needing to rely on warcaster.

PCs don’t get “Multiattack,” they get “Extra Attack” instead. Multiattack is its own special Action that PCs don’t have access to. Extra Attack is a different rule entirely, and only grants a single extra attack per Attack Action.

The sword would have to be Light, like a Shortsword, as per the rules for Two-Weapon Fighting.

If you take the Dual Wielder feat you could use a longsword as well.
That being said I do like the mixed-range possibilities of using a hand crossbow in the secondary arm
I just realized you had written Dual Wielder and I had missed that and deleted that part of that post. Lol
I don't do forums much, but I looked at your homebrew and liked a decent bit of it. Lemme ask you a DM question. Now that Thri-kreen is actually out, would you allow a player to use their baby hand to hold a longsword that is versatile or does that seem too strong? If not, they could forgo the dual wielder feat at the loss of being able to do other stuff while getting the d10 out of their sword.
They would have to use both of their big arms to wield the longsword as it isn’t light. If they took the dual wielder feat though I’d probably allow it then because it’s cool. 😉

Exactly. It opens up the possibility of using Two Weapon fighting with a two-handed weapon/one-handed weapon combo OR using two one-handed weapons and a shield at the same time, but does not increase the total number of attacks you get beyond normal.
Actually it can.
Any other race with a sword and shield is unable to make the bonus action weapon attack from two weapon fighting as they have a shield in their second hand. "Two-Weapon Fighting When you take the Attack action and attack with a light melee weapon that you’re holding in one hand, you can use a bonus action to attack with a different light melee weapon that you’re holding in the other hand. You don’t add your ability modifier to the damage of the bonus attack, unless that modifier is negative." Dual wielder lets you do this when the weapons aren't light, "You can use two-weapon fighting even when the one-handed melee weapons you are wielding aren't light." But you stil get an extra attack for a bonus action if you're holding two weapons. The Thri Kreen is the only race that can hold 2 weapons and a shield at the same time with no penalty.
Therefore the Thri Kreen have the potential for one more attack than is normal for other races, or 2ac more than other races with the same number of attacks.

I think theres a misunderstanding, because I did not say anything to the contrary to what you have pointed out. When I said " does not increase the total number of attacks beyond normal" what I meant is that you still only get one additional attack using the bonus action from TWF like any other race. That is to say, having 4 arms does not mean you get any more possible attacks than someone with two arms, it just opens up some variety in which weapons you can use for it

I had looked through all or this for one reason, seeing how it worked in general, as a race I am making also has 4 arms. The lower 2 aren't baby arms though.
(in case you were wondering, I am making Orochi from MTG)

That's really practical! could switch between offensive and defensive during combat easily

Only if you take the Dual Wielder feat.
Try this one on, a Thri-kreen with either an arcane focus / holy symbol or a Rapier, a shield, a hand crossbow, and a free hand with the Crossbow Expert feat.
