I originally posted this over in Homebrew & House Rules, but I think it also fits the Unearthed Arcana-style feedback crowd, so I’m cross-posting here rather than duplicating the full subclass text.
Kinetic Vanguard is a psionic Fighter subclass built around a risk/reward mechanic called Overload: before you roll, you can push harder for a stronger effect, but you take HP damage if it lands. The subclass has three discipline paths:
Cryokinesis — battlefield control, lockdown, slow, and ice-based denial
Pyrokinesis — nova damage, fire buildup, and explosive payoff turns
Psychokinesis — movement control, repositioning, shoves, pulls, and tempo play
The goal is to make a Fighter subclass where tactical decisions feel meaningful without turning the character into a full caster. It runs on a short-rest Psi pool and is meant to feel martial first, psionic second.
Whether Overload feels fair as a risk/reward mechanic
Whether any discipline looks clearly stronger or weaker than the others
Whether the subclass reads cleanly at the table
Whether there are any obvious abuse cases, multiclass cheese, or action-economy problems
Whether it feels like a Fighter subclass rather than a disguised half-caster
Mods: if cross-posting like this is frowned upon, no hard feelings — feel free to close this and I’ll keep discussion centralized in the original thread.
Thanks in advance to anyone willing to take a look.
