The "Unearthed Arcana" released a slew of new conjuration spells, allowing spellcasters the ability to summon creatures from every corner of the D&D cosmology, it seems.
Aberrations from the Far Realm...demons & celestials...primordials & Fey...nightmarish monstrosities from the Shadowfell...undead...
In addition to rejuvenating the appeal of Conjuration Wizards (seriously, with the conjuration wizard's ability to not break concentration, these summons are ridiculous), the summoned creatures allow most magic characters fresh ways to build their characters' backstories.
For example...I've had a Bladesinger wizard in the works whose mentor was slain by a rogue member of their order.
Out of guilt, mourning, or obsession, that character now has access to "Summon Undead"...now my Bladesinger can conjure the ghostly apparition of their mentor, even if they are only a mere shadow of them, and add it to their Bladesong as a sort of "dance".
Likewise, a cleric can now summon a "Celestial" from the court or native Plane of their deity...a planetar or hound archon, perhaps.
Archfey Warlocks can call an eladrin champion from either the Summer or Gloaming Court...GOO-locks get their aberrations...
...and all of this comes with the flexibility of flavoring the looks / behaviors of your summon!
Brilliant!

"Where words fail, swords prevail. Where blood is spilled, my cup is filled" -Cartaphilus
"I have found the answer to the meaning of life. You ask me what the answer is? You already know what the answer to life is. You fear it more than the strike of a viper, the ravages of disease, the ire of a lover. The answer is always death. But death is a gentle mistress with a sweet embrace, and you owe her a debt of restitution. Life is not a gift, it is a loan."
I didn't realize that each had some variability in them which is pretty cool. Even if a bard doesn't like their fey spirit to be fey, you can absolutely reskin it as something more fiendish for example. Leaves a lot of openings for really interesting stuff.
