I have an Abjuration Wizard who just picked up the Telekinetic Reprisal ability with an 8th level feat. My question is, the telekinetic reprisal reaction is triggered by taking damage from an opponent within 10 feet. Can the reaction be triggered if that damage is fully soaked by my Wizard’s Arcane Ward?
The Arcane Ward rule states "whenever you take damage, the ward takes the damage instead" so it seems like you do "take" the damage, it's just redirected before that translates into losing hit-points.
Since the trigger for Arcane Ward is "you take damage" and the same is true for Telekinetic Reprisal I would say that both are able to trigger as if the condition for one is met, then it must also be met for the other.
It's a slightly tricky area of the rules though as in any situation where things occur simultaneously, whoever has the current turn gets to decide in what order they happen, so your DM could argue that the Arcane Ward happens first, and since it took the damage instead of you, the Telekinetic Reprisal trigger is no longer valid.
Personally I'd rule yes by rule-of-cool and because it's a limited use, so it's not like you can infinitely abuse it.
That was my thinking, and as you accurately stated, it is a limited use, cool but not particularly over-powered ability. It did, however, play a very significant role in a major combat encounter in our last session, and it was my first time using the ability(we just leveled up to 8th), so I just wanted to get some second and third opinions here. Cheers and thanks!
