This scimitar was forged from conductors of electricity and allows the user to imbue their attacks with arcing energy. As a bonus action, you can activate this weapon for 1 minute. All attacks made with this weapon deal an extra 1d4 lightning damage. This weapon can only be activated three times per short or long rest. The weapon can be deactivated (no action required).
As an action, you can end the activation of this weapon by allowing energy to burst out of this weapon. Make a single weapon attack against one creature. If the attack hits, the target suffers the effects of the original attack and takes an extra 4d4 lightning damage. After this action is taken, this weapon becomes a nonmagical scimitar until the end of the user's next long rest.
Proficiency with a Scimitar allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.
This weapon has the following mastery property. To use this property, you must have a feature that lets you use it.
Nick. When you make the extra attack of the Light property, you can make it as part of the Attack action instead of as a Bonus Action. You can make this extra attack only once per turn.
Notes: creature that is not undead, Finesse, Light, Nick

This weapon can be made stronger by finding crystals of pure lightning energy to imbue into it. The first crystal is always a major rare wondrous item that increases the damage dice of the lightning attacks to a d6 and gives the weapon a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls. After using the action to deactivate the weapon, the crystal deactivates instead. All attacks made decrease to a d4 and the bonus is lost until the end of your next long rest. The second crystal is always a major very rare wondrous item that increases the damage die to a d8 and the bonus to +2. Using the deactivation action deactivates this crystal instead, decreasing the damage die to a d6 and the bonus to +1. The final crystal is always a major legendary wondrous item, and increases the damage die to a d10 and the bonus to +3. Taking the deactivation action only deactivates this crystal, decreasing the damage bonus to a d8 and the bonus to +2. The deactivation effect can be taken one additional time for each crystal in the scimitar.
This is my very first homebrew item that will actually be seeing use (hopefully) in a campaign. I thought it would be awesome to have a weapon with its own sort of “level-up” system, and I think this is a good way of doing that. By the way, extra attack doesn’t apply to the deactivation action and neither does effects like thirsting blade. Its a single attack that’s meant to mimic the switchaxe discharge from MHW. If anybody wants to use this in furniture campaigns with different elements and such, make sure to consult your DM first before doing so, but that would be awesome. I liked lightning because of the idea of a crackling blast in your attacks, but elements like fire, thunder, and cold also work super well! Have fun with this awesome homebrew!
