Wondrous Item, rare
This necklace has 1d6 + 3 beads hanging from it. You can use an action to detach a bead and throw it up to 60 feet away. When it reaches the end of its trajectory, the bead detonates as a 3rd-level fireball spell (save DC 15).
You can hurl multiple beads, or even the whole necklace, as one action. When you do so, increase the level of the fireball by 1 for each bead beyond the first.
Notes: Damage, Combat, Jewelry

Posted Dec 21, 2023if you hurl multiple beads, do they need to make a save for every fireball you cast?

Posted Feb 26, 2024It says they dont go off until they "reach the end of their trajectory", so can I pull them off the necklace and carry the loose beads in a bag?

Posted Jun 2, 2026Using a bead is still a “magic action”, which can’t be used with action surge unless you have a class or racial feature that specifically allows it. Fireball is a 3rd level spell, so even an Eldrich Knight with improved war magic can’t cast a 2nd fireball with action surge.
Quicken Spell would allow you to fast cast a 2nd fireball as a spell since the bead doesn’t use a slot.

Posted Jun 4, 2026We had to kill a young white dragon that was holed up in a cave under a stone keep on the shore of a lake. After clearing out undead in the keep, we worked our way through the limestone tunnels under the keep and found the white dragon in a small cave with water dripping down on it from various semi-frozen spots in the ceiling (Red Flag #1). The plan? We asked the DM if the Rogue could use his recently found Necklace of Fireballs so he could throw one bead (3rd level fireball) from it when our Wizard casts his own 3rd level fireball so the combined effect would weaken the dragon enough for our stealthy Ranger, Barbarian, and wood elf Paladin to kill it quickly. The DM smiled kindly, shrugged, and said, "Sure." (Red Flag #2)
Just as we try to sneak a little closer to position ourselves for the fight, the Rogue blew his stealth roll with a natural 1. The dragon woke up, roared, and we rolled Initiative. The Rogue went first but held his action waiting for our Wizard to cast his spell. The dragon immediately seriously injured our Ranger and Barbarian. When our Wizard then yelled "Now!" to the Rogue, the Rogue player panicked...and threw the entire Necklace of Fireballs with nine beads. The expected two 3rd level Fireballs suddenly became a 3rd level Fireball from the Wizard and an 11th level Fireball.
The resulting explosive yield had the following effects.
1) it almost killed the dragon outright and did kill the Ranger, 2) it flash-melted the semi-frozen cavern roof with the instant massive change in temperature shattering the roof.
This in turn, 3) collapsed the foundation of the stone keep into the cavern, causing 4) the stone keep itself to also collapse into the cavern, leaving behind a small crater that 5) caused the lake to immediately drain through the crater into the entire cavern-tunnel complex.
Immediate TPK.
And the Rogue player actually asked, "Can I make a DEX save for half damage?"
