Wondrous Item, uncommon
This glass jar, 3 inches in diameter, contains 1d4 + 1 doses of a thick mixture that smells faintly of aloe. The jar and its contents weigh 1/2 pound.
As an action, one dose of the ointment can be swallowed or applied to the skin. The creature that receives it regains 2d8 + 2 hit points, ceases to be poisoned, and is cured of any disease.
Notes: Bonus: Hit Points, Ceases Poison, Cures Diseases, Healing, Consumable
Neat
Potion of Greater Healing (Also an Uncommon): 4d4+4 (14), once
This: 2d8+2 (11), 1d4+1 times (min. 2 (22), max 5 (55), average 3 (33))
Greater Min/Max Heal: 8/20
Ointment Min/Max Heal PER USE: 4/18
Ointment Min/Max Heal LIFETIME: 8/90
Overall, Ointment won't turn the tide of battle, but it'll last you through the war quite well.
Curing a poison is very good as well. Some poisons have other negative effects attached to them. So healing for lets say 13 and getting rid of the poison that caused your party member to go blind for a minute is much so useful.
Also the curing all disease can be good too.
This is Keoghtom's Ointment on p.179 of the DMG. Why the name changed?
This is from the Basic Rules, which strips the fancy names from a lot of the items.
I don’t know about fancy name but the Ointment was originally called Keoghtom’s Ointment and was named after Tom Keogh.Tom Keogh was a childhood friend of Gary's, and according to Tim Kask founded TSR with Gary Gygax.
how do you track charges in DDB character sheets?
Slightly old comment, but might help anyone looking in the future; you can track charges by clicking on the item in your inventory, a details banner for the item will pop up on the right hand side of the screen, and there will be a number of boxes under the name of the item which you can tick to mark off used charges.
In Dragonlance, Ansalon, this ointment is called "MISHAKAL'S HEALING BALM." Further, it can restore a PC to life from death. According to The Fifth Age, The Last Tower, Book One, Chapter 4: "Mishakal's Healing Balm also neutralizes poisons in the same way it cures diseases. An individual who has died from a toxin can be restored to life if someone applies the balm within 5 minutes of death." As DM, because the party is going to actual WAR, and the clerics are all too low to be casting Raise Dead (a 5th Level Cleric spell) I am slightly altering it. I think that an NPC, Wyhan most likely, should give one of the characters a jar of Mishakal's Healing Balm, noting that it can raise the dead, but it requires 2 doses, and it must be applied within 5 minutes of death. This is directly related for the reason Goldmoon was originally given the Blue Crystal Staff, for its power to Raise the Dead. However, there's only ONE of that artifact, and its in the hands of the original Heroes of the Lance. So, I was left to devise my own artifact, possibly the bottom 12 inches of the blue crystal staff that had broken off and has the power to Raise the Dead once per day, or, find something else. Thus, I found Mishakal's Healing Balm in one of my old books, found it is analogous to Keoghtom's Ointment 5e, and altered it slightly, so that it can also raise the dead--just in case! (Note: it also occurred to me, that if two PC's, one a cleric and one a ranger, both have a Medallion of Faith, and pray together to Raise Dead, their combined Levels should be sufficient to appeal to the gods to restore the hapless PC to life.)
Is this ointment something that can be taught to be made?
