This item appears to be a longsword hilt. While grasping the hilt, you can use a bonus action to cause a blade of pure radiance to spring into existence, or make the blade disappear. While the blade exists, this magic longsword has the finesse property. If you are proficient with shortswords or longswords, you are proficient with the sun blade.
You gain a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this weapon, which deals radiant damage instead of slashing damage. When you hit an undead with it, that target takes an extra 1d8 radiant damage.
The sword's luminous blade emits bright light in a 15-foot radius and dim light for an additional 15 feet. The light is sunlight. While the blade persists, you can use an action to expand or reduce its radius of bright and dim light by 5 feet each, to a maximum of 30 feet each or a minimum of 10 feet each.
Proficiency with a Longsword allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.
This weapon has the following mastery property. To use this property, you must have a feature that lets you use it.
Sap. If you hit a creature with this weapon, that creature has Disadvantage on its next attack roll before the start of your next turn.
Notes: Bonus: Magic, Damage: Radiant, Replace Damage Type: Radiant, Weapon Property: Finesse, Damage, Combat, Versatile, Sap
As seen in the 12th episode of the 3rd season of clone wars, when a couple of nightsisters together with Ventress herself get invisible and use lightsabers to fight Dooku, the person wielding the lightsaber is invisible, but the laser blade is not. That's how I would rule it. Yes, I would rule it based on an episode of a cartoon that has nothing to do with D&D whatsoever, but alas, it does make sense.
Don’t give Disney any ideas, or they will buy DnD and screw it up too!!!
Unless you're playing a Kensei monk in which case let's go boys!
Have you found some answer? My character use sun blade and greater invisibility and i was wondering the same question.
"Nose like a zipper"
That's an ugly nose.
Asked DM if my character Martell could change this into a Spear vs Sword.....you know.....Sun Spear......Martell........ya i'm fan of A Song of Ice and Fire.
An elegant weapon for a more civilized age.
Not so clumsy or random as a fireball.
cool seems a very nice sword for a fighter its like a mid-evil lightsaber.
Non-Kensai monks can potentially use it as a monk weapon too, as long as you are playing with the optional class features from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything. A sunblade would qualify for the "Dedicated Weapon" feature.
But a Monk fighting Vampires doesn't need to use the Longsword ability at all. They have many other things to hit an enemy with to not lose their bonus on a hit. Stunning Strikes, poison to stun (sharpen fingernails for piercing coated in poison), anything to get the Vamp to end it's turn in Sunlight while the Team romps em, frak, have everyone attuned to the sword and just pass the baton on turns... maybe?
The sunsword from the Curse of Strahd adventure is described as having the features of a sun blade, but the sunsword just adds sentience to the object. I honestly expected more of a legendary blade that was made by the powerful Sergei Von Zarovich, and the fact that the sword has lasted over 400 years without deterioration.
life suck.
yes
Yeah I expected a little more flair but I have seen it where people change it up a little. They improve the blade when the crystal blade is added back to the hilt, making it feel like the legendary weapon it claims to be.
what does it mean when it says versatile?
that's cool popobot
I agree!
No usually you add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll not the damage roll
It usually cant be bought but if it can between 2 and 5k gold for a rare magic item
