Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If the Ancient Death Flower fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.
Turn Resistance. The Ancient Death Flower has advantage on saving throws against any effect that turns undead.
Magic Resistance. The Ancient Death Flower has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
Siege Monster. The Ancient Death Flower deals double damage to objects and structures.
Photosynthesis. When The Ancient Death Flower would receive radiant damage the damage is reduced to 0 and it heals for the amount of damage it would have received instead. Additionally, The Ancient Death Flower regains 25 hit points at the start of his turn. If he takes fire, this trait doesn’t function at the start of his next turn. It dies only if it starts its turn with 0 hit points and doesn’t regain hitpoints.
Corpses. When first encountered, The Ancient Death Flower contains the corpses of 1d6 + 3 humanoids. The Ancient Death Flower can hold the remains of up to nine dead humanoids. These remains have total cover against attacks and other effects outside The Ancient Death Flower. If The Ancient Death Flower dies, the corpses within it can be pulled free.
While it has at least one humanoid corpse in its body, The Ancient Death Flower can use a bonus action to do one of the following:
- The Ancient Death Flower digests one humanoid corpse in its body and instantly regains 22 (2d20) hit points. Nothing of the digested body remains. Any equipment on the corpse is expelled from the corpse flower in its space.
- The Ancient Death Flower animates one dead humanoid in its body, turning it into a plant zombie. The plant zombie appears in an unoccupied space within 5 feet of the corpse flower and acts immediately after it in the initiative order. The plant zombie acts as an ally of The Ancient Death Flower but isn’t under its control, and the flower’s stench clings to it (see the Stench of Death trait).
Needle Defense. Each time a creature makes a melee attack against The Ancient Death Flower, it takes 11 magical piercing damage. A creature can choose to make an attack with disadvantage to avoid this damage.
Stench of Death. Each creature that is not incapacitated that starts or ends its turn within 30 feet of The Ancient Death Flower or one of its zombies must make a DC 20 Constitution saving throw, or take 14 (4d6) necrotic damage +11(2d10) poison damage (half on a successful save) and grant The Ancient Death Flower advantage on attack rolls against it until the start of the creature’s next turn. Constructs and undead are immune to this effect. On a failed save, the creature is incapacitated until the end of the turn. Creatures that are immune to poison damage or the poisoned condition automatically succeed on this saving throw. On a successful save, the creature is immune to the incapacitating effect of the Ancient Death Flower's stench for 24 hours. The Ancient Death Flower can also activate this ability as a bonus action on its turn.
Undead Fortitude. If damage reduces The Ancient Death Flower to 0 hit points, he must make a Constitution saving throw with a DC of 5 + the damage taken, unless the damage is radiant or from a critical hit. On a success, he drops to 1 hit point instead.
Spider Climb. The Ancient Death Flower can climb difficult surfaces, including upside down on ceilings, without needing to make an ability check.
Life Eater. A creature reduced to 0 hit points from damage dealt by The Ancient Death Flower dies and can’t be revived by any means short of a wish spell. If the target is a humanoid that drops to 0 hit points as a result of this damage, it dies and is implanted with a plant zombie bulb. Unless the bulb is destroyed, the corpse animates as a plant zombie after being dead for 24 hours. The bulb is destroyed if the creature is raised from the dead before it can transform into a plant zombie, or if the corpse is targeted by a remove curse spell or similar magic before it animates.
Dual Heritage. The Ancient Death Flower is considered both a plant and an undead.
Spellcasting. The Ancient Death Flower is an 16th-level spellcaster. Its spellcasting ability is Wisdom (spell save DC 17, +9 to hit with spell attacks). The Ancient Death Flower has the following spells prepared:

Tentacle. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (2d6 + 2) bludgeoning +21(6d6) poison damage. If the target is Large or smaller, it is grappled (escape DC 19) and must succeed on a DC 20 Constitution saving throw or be poisoned for 1 minute. The target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. The Ancient Death Flower has four tentacles , each of which can grapple only one target.
Raking Vine. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 22 (5d6 + 4) piercing damage +18(5d6) cold damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 19). Until this grapple ends, the target takes 18(4d8) necrotic damage at the start of each of its turns and its hitpoint maximum is reduced by an amount equal to the necrotic damage taken. The target must succeed on a DC 20 Constitution saving throw or be paralyzed for 1 minute. The target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. The Ancient Death Flower has two raking vines, each of which can grapple only one target.
Harvest the Dead. The Ancient Death Flower grabs one unsecured dead humanoid within 15 feet of it and stuffs the corpse into itself, along with any equipment the corpse is wearing or carrying. The remains can be used with the Corpses trait.
Needle. Ranged Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, range 160 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (4d6) piercing damage. The target must succeed on a DC 20 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened until the end of The Ancient Death Flower’s next turn. While frightened in this way, the creature is also paralyzed. If a target’s saving throw is successful, the target is immune to The Ancient Death Flower’s Needle for the next 24 hours.
Yellow Musk (3/Day). The Ancient Death Flower’s flowers release a strong musk that targets all humanoids within 120 feet of it. Each target must succeed on a DC 20 Wisdom saving throw or be charmed by The Ancient Death Flower for 1 minute. A creature charmed in this way does nothing on its turn except move as close as it can to The Ancient Death Flower (dashing if possible). A creature charmed by The Ancient Death Flower can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.
Spore Breath (Recharge 5–6). The The Ancient Death Flower exhales poisonous gas in a 75 foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 20 Constitution saving throw, taking 36 (7d8+4) psychic damage + 32(7d8) poison damage on a failed save and be stunned for 1 minute. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a succes, or half as much damage on a successful one.
The Ancient Death Flower gains the following legendary action options, which replace all of the lich’s legendary actions.
Tentacle. The Ancient Death Flower makes one attack with its tentacle or Raking Vine.
