Description
The soldiers of the Achaemenid Persian Empire are recruited from across Persia and the middle east. Most of the army is composed of tens of thousands of peasants conscripted to become spearmen, however there is always a core of elite archers who are professional soldiers, trained with the recurve bow. Their prime function is as a fighting force in a major battle, providing supporting fire and "turning the sky dark with volleys that blot out the sun." Archers are never meant to get into melee, and are defended by spearmen.
The Achaemenid Persian Empire has famously conquered Babylon, Assyria, Syria, Phoenicia, the Levant, Egypt, Cyprus, Anatolia, Lydia, Ionia, Thrace, Sogdia and Bactria, becoming unquestionably the most powerful empire in the world. Persians believe in Zoroastrianism, and follow the god Ahura Mazda.
