Burning Body. Any creature within 5 feet of the phoenix that hits it with a melee attack takes 3 (1d6) fire damage.
Fiery Death and Rebirth. When the phoenix dies, it's body combusts and explodes, sending fire out in all directions. Each creature with 30 feet of the phoenix must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 2d12 fire damage on a failed save or half as much on a successful one. The fire ignites flammable objects in the area that aren't worn or carried.
The explosion destroys the phoenix's body and what is left behind is an egg-shaped cinder that weighs 5 pounds. The cinder is blazing hot, dealing 3d8 fire damage to any creature who touches it, though no more than once per round. The cinder hatches into a Phoenix Hatchling after 1d10 + 90 days.
Flyby. The phoenix doesn't provoke opportunity attacks when it flies out of an enemy's reach.
Illumination. The phoenix sheds bright light in a 40-foot radius and dim light for an additional 40 feet.
Innate Spellcasting. The phoenix's innate spellcasting ability is Wisdom (spell save DC 16; +8 to spell attacks). It can innately cats the following spells, requiring no components:
At will: light
3/day each: fireball
1/day each: wall of fire
Legendary Resistance (1/Day). If the phoenix fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.
Multiattack. The phoenix makes two attacks: one with its beak and one with its talons.
Beak. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (3d8 + 2) piercing damage and 3 (1d6) fire damage.
Talons. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (3d6 + 6) slashing damage and 3 (1d6) fire damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 15). Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained, and the phoenix can't use it talons on another target.
The phoenix can take 2 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The phoenix regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.
Detect. The phoenix makes a Wisdom (Perception) check.
Beak Attack. The phoenix makes a beak attack.
Wing Attack (Costs 2 Actions). The phoenix beats its wings. Each creature within 5 feet of the phoenix must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or take 6 (1d6 + 3) bludgeoning damage and 3 (1d6) fire damage and be knocked prone. The phoenix can then fly up to half its flying speed.
Description
Phoenixes were originally created in the Elemental Plane of Fire, but their kind escaped from there and found themselves on the Material Plane where they are rare and usually dwell in very mountainous areas. At first glance, a phoenix can just look like a red roc, but these magnificent creatures can ignite their whole body having it catch flame and quickly scare off incoming trouble.
