Traits

Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If the dragon fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.

Amphibious. The dragon can breathe air and water.

Lava Breather:  Can breathe under lava and magma and is immune to the effects unlike Red dragons

Actions

Multi-attack. The dragon can use its Frightful Presence. It then makes three attacks: one with its bite and two with its claws.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +15 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 21 (2d10 + 10) piercing damage plus 14 (4d6) fire damage.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +15 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (2d6 + 10) slashing damage.

Tail. Melee Weapon Attack: +15 to hit, reach 20 ft., one target. Hit: 19 (2d8 + 10) bludgeoning damage.

Frightful Presence. Each creature of the dragon's choice that is within 180 feet of the dragon and aware of it must succeed on a DC 22 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened for 1 minute. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. If a creature's saving throw is successful or the effect ends for it, the creature is immune to the dragon's Frightful Presence for the next 24 hours.

Fire Breath (Recharge 5–6). The dragon exhales fire in a 90-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 24 Dexterity saving throw, taking 91 (24d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Ashen Breath (Recharge 5–6). The dragon exhales volcanic ash in a 90-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 24 Constitution saving throw, taking (16d10) suffocation damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. Also have to make a Perception check DC 24 at the start of its turn to see if its vision is obscured

Legendary Actions

The dragon can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The dragon regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

Detect. The dragon makes a Wisdom (Perception) check.

Tail Attack. The dragon makes a tail attack.

Wing Attack (Costs 2 Actions). The dragon beats its wings. Each creature within 20 feet of the dragon must succeed on a DC 25 Dexterity saving throw or take 17 (2d6 + 12) bludgeoning damage and be knocked prone. The dragon can then fly up to half its flying speed.

Mythic Actions

Change Shape. The dragon magically polymorphs into a humanoid or beast that has a challenge rating no higher than its own, or back into its true form. It reverts to its true form if it dies. Any equipment it is wearing or carrying is absorbed or borne by the new form (the dragon's choice).

In a new form, the dragon retains its alignment, hit points, Hit Dice, ability to speak, proficiencies, Legendary Resistance, lair actions, and Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores, as well as this action. Its statistics and capabilities are otherwise replaced by those of the new form, except any class features or legendary actions of that form.

Description

The odor of brimstone and lava surrounds an obsidian dragon, whose jagged horns and strange feathers define its silhouette. Its massive maw glows as if molten lava was in it at all times, and its eyes are a striking color of the lava it calls home against its dark scales and feathers.

Nothing on this dragon can burn at all not even its feathers which look like Volcanic ash

Fond Friend of Humanoids. Obsidian dragons enjoy the company of other Metallic dragons. Their only true friendships outside their own kin arise in the company of humanoids, and many silver dragons spend as much time in humanoid form as they do in draconic form. A obsidian dragon adopts a benign humanoid persona such as a kindly old sage or a young wanderer, and it often has mortal companions with whom it develops strong friendships.

Hidden Lair. An obsidian dragon keeps its hoard in a well-guarded vault deep within its lair. Magical wards placed on the vault make it all but impossible to remove any treasures without the dragon knowing about it.

Conflict Resolver. Obsidian dragons actively oppose tyranny, and many obsidian dragons yearn to test their mettle by putting their size and strength to good use.

When a conflict unfolds near its lair, a obsidian dragon ascertains the underlying cause, then offers its services to any side that fights for good or what the dragon believes is good. Once a obsidian dragon commits to a cause, it remains a staunch ally.

Lair and Lair Actions

A Obsidian Dragon’s Lair

Obsidian dragons lair's are in near idyllic lakes and rivers of former volcanoes, or caves with volcanic or geothermal activity are the most highly prized obsidian dragon lairs, creating hazards that hinder intruders and letting searing heat and volcanic gases wash over a dragon as it sleeps. They fight over these active volcanic regions often with the red dragons and seek to resolve peacefully with the gold dragons in the lakes and rivers of volcanoes of centuries past.

With its hoard well protected deep within the lair and seeking to know its friends are safe, an Obsidian dragon spends as much of its time outside the mountain or underwater volcanic cave. For a dragon, the great heights of the world are the throne from which it can look out to survey all it protects—and the wider world it seeks to one day protect as well.

Lair Actions

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the dragon takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; the dragon can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row:
In a Volcano

  • Magma erupts from a point on the ground the dragon can see within 120 feet of it, creating a 20-foot-high, 5-foot-radius geyser. Each creature in the geyser’s area must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 21 (6d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
  • Steam erupts from a point on the ground the dragon can see within 120 feet of it, creating a 20-foot-high, 15-foot-radius cloud. Each creature in the cloud’s area must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 21 (6d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
  • An old volcanic noxious gas forms a cloud in a 20-foot-radius sphere centered on a point the dragon can see within 120 feet of it. The sphere spreads around corners, and its area is lightly obscured. It lasts until initiative count 20 on the next round. Each creature that starts its turn in the cloud must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution saving throw or be poisoned until the end of its turn. While poisoned in this way, a creature is incapacitated.

Regional Effects

The region containing a legendary Obsidian dragon’s lair is warped by the dragon’s magic, which creates one or more of the following effects:

  • Whenever a creature that can understand a language sleeps or enters a state of trance or reverie within 6 miles of the dragon’s lair, the dragon can establish telepathic contact with that creature and converse with it in its dreams. The creature remembers its conversation with the dragon upon waking.
  • Water sources within 1 mile of the lair are supernaturally warm and have a high mineral count .
  • Rocky fissures within 1 mile of the dragon’s lair form portals to the Elemental Plane of Fire, allowing creatures of elemental fire into the world to dwell nearby, or steam pillars if in its other locations making portals to the Elemental Plain of Air.

If the dragon dies, these effects fade over the course of 1d12 days.
