Delicate. Any creature that touches the ediacaran must make a DC 10 Dexterity (Sleight of Hand) check to avoid damaging it.  On a failed saving throw, the ediacaran takes 1 point of damage.

Sessile. The ediacaran has a movement speed of 0, and does not benefit from any effect that would increase its movement speed. Any ability that would cause an ediacaran to move fails to move it and deals 1 point of damage to it instead.

Fossilizing Foam.  When the ediacaran is reduced to 0 hit points, it ruptures.  If it is underwater, it releases a cloud of adhesive foam.  All creatures within 5 of the ediacaran must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw.  On a failed save, the target is restrained. It must then make a Constitution saving throw at the end of each of its turns. If it successfully saves three times, the condition ends. If it fails its save three times, it permanently turns to stone and is subjected to the petrified condition. The successes and failures don't need to be consecutive; keep track of both until the target collects three of a kind.

A creature petrified by this effect is also seeded with 10 (4d4) ediacaran spores, which bloom into new, mature ediacarans after 4 (1d6 + 1) days.

Water Breathing. The ediacaran can breathe only underwater.

Description

An ediacaran is a primeval oceanic organism, one of the earliest and most ancient forms of life.  Beyond that, not much is known about them.  It isn't even certain if they are individual creatures or superorganisms composed of microbial colonies.

What is known is that they resemble brilliantly colored plants coming in a wide variety of hues and shapes, ranging from blue spiraling seaweed to red ferns; from leaves and flowers to more fungal shapes; some even look like underwater onions.

If damaged, an ediacaran ruptures, releasing a cloud adhesive foam that rapidly fossilizes any creature caught in the cloud and seeding it with spores.  The fossilized creature then becomes the substrate on which the new generation of ediacarans grows.

Fresh and undamaged ediacarans are extremely valuable to alchemists.  Every part of the organism is teeming with primal substances which can be used as ingredients to make a wide variety of potent potions and poisons.
