Abjurer's Armor. Whenever Vaelish takes damage, he can apply half of it to his mage armor. He can absorb up to 13 points of damage per day that way. This ability recharges after a long rest.
Spellcasting. Vaelish is a 5th-level spellcaster. His spellcasting ability is Intelligence (spell save DC 13, +6 to hit with spell attacks). Vaelish has the following spells prepared.
Cantrips: light, prestidigitation, shocking grasp
1st Level (4 slots): charm person, magic missile, shield
2nd Level (3 slots): invisibility, scorching ray
3rd Level (2 slots): fireball
Sapphire Staff. Vaelish staff is a rare magic item that requires attunement by a spellcaster. It has 6 charges which can be used to cast the following spells. The staff regains 1d4 +1 charges after a long rest.

4th Level (4 charges): dimension door

Description
Vaelish Gant is a member of the Arcane Brotherhood. Jendrick the Blue was his mentor and Vaelish is attempting to make him into the new "Arcane Archmage" (leader) of the Arcane Brotherhood, thereby securing a place as "Overwizard" under his reign.
As he is frustrated by the brotherhood's attempts to gain a foothold within any of the major cities along the Sword Coast, he attempts to take control of the trade in and around Ten-Towns (Icewind Dale) to secure the Brotherhood interests in this icy region. He firmly believes that the Icewind Dale has the potential to become a major player among the other large trade cities and he wants to Arcane Brotherhood to take control of it before anyone else can - this way he also hopes to demonstrate his tactical skill and wit to those in the Brotherhood and especially his mentor.
Scheming Apprentice. Even though Vaelish's abilities are barely above those of an apprentice he is arrogant, haughty and likes to see himself as better than everyone else. He dresses in a way that clearly defines him as a wizard and is proud to flaunt his elaborate Sapphire Staff that contains a glowing Sapphire held within a silvery cage at the top end of the staff.
