Traits

Amphibious. The Boomcroak can breathe air and water.

Standing Leap. The Boomcroak's long jump is up to 10 feet and its high jump is up to 5 feet, with or without a running start.

Sticky Feet. The Boomcroak has advantage on any checks made to stay attached to a surface or creature that it is touching.

Swell. When a Boomcroak first rolls initiative and at the end of any of its turns, it may use a reaction to swell its body, giving it access to the action Explode. After swelling the Boomcroak may use an action on any turn afterwards to reduce its swelling otherwise the swelling will go away after a minute has passed.

Actions

Explode. The Boomcroak may only take this action after it has swollen. Boomcroak's chem sac reaches a critical mass and the Boomcroak explodes, coating the area in a deadly burning acid. Every creature within 5ft. of the Boomcroak must make a DC 11 Dexterity saving throw, taking 11 (3d6+2) acid damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. Creatures currently being touched by the Boomcroak have disadvantage on the check. After all checks have been made and damage has been calculated, the Boomcroak dies instantly.

Description

The Boomcroak is a large bulbous toad primarily bright blue in colouration with orange stripes leading from the eyes out to the back of the neck and down its back to a short vestigial tail. Boomcroaks are typically found in large groups of up to 30 in wetlands, swamps and shaded forests in great numbers where they hunt insects and sometimes small mammals like mice and squirrels. They are extremely friendly and social creatures that are known to sometimes approach larger creatures for affection and have often visited campsites and settlements, even following Stormwalkers onto their ships. Boomcroaks however are most notorious for their unusual defense mechanism and is where they get their name from. If a Boomcroak gets too excited or stressed, either from being attacked or from simply getting too much attention, the creature starts making a distinctive high-pitched squealing sound and the chem sac underneath its chin begins swelling up to about half the size of its body as special glands start secreting special noxious chemicals. Once the sac is filled and the Boomcroak hasn’t calmed down, the second part of the Boomcoak’s defence mechanism is that it instinctually latches onto whatever is perceived to be a threat and detonates itself, covering the victim in a foul-smelling burning liquid that is highly dangerous to unprotected organic creatures. Most Wastelanders find the Boomcroak to be dangerous pests and frequently give them a wide berth though more daring Wastelanders and even some Stormwalkers have been known to keep some as pets, either for companionship or to use as weapons. It is also known in the remains of Naragalapototh there are some groups that venerate the Boomcroak, treating them with sacred reverence and leaving them offerings of food at special altars while burning sweet smelling incense. Some of these groups even consider it a sign of good fortune when a Boomcroak wonders into their particular camps and settlements.
