Description

The soldiers of the kingdom of Aksum are drawn from the men of the general public: potters, farmers, and workers, recruited in a time of war to protect the kingdom or expand its territory. They serve the king and his appointed generals. The kingdom of Aksum is very wealthy due to their control of the trade routes from Egypt to India, as well as trading with the neighbouring Roman Empire. Aksum itself produces luxury goods, such as ivory, tortoise shell, giraffes, and obsidian glass. These are traded in exchange for linen, bronze pots and pans, writing implements, wine, and other goods that are common in Rome but rare in Ethiopia. Aksum has large cities, walls, and churches built of bricks, or sometimes entire buildings carved out of stone. Aksum's Red Sea ports are always bustling with foreign merchants and trade goods. Aksum nobles can speak ancient Greek, in order to talk to merchants and diplomats.

As guards, Aksum soldiers can patrol a city, or fortified town, and are also used as the bodyguards of merchants and nobles. Their prime function however, is as a fighting force in a battle. The large Aksumite army invaded and sacked Nubia, fended off raiding tribes, and defended itself both during the collapse of Rome, and from the conquests of the Caliphate. Aksum soldiers are armed with iron tipped spears, and spearmen also double as light cavalry when riding horses. Aksumites follow African Orthodox Christianity.
