Traits

Tiny. The mantis can enter the space occupied by any creature. In addition, while in its space, it can climb up any Small or larger creature as if it was walking.

Dexterous Son of a Night Hag. The mantis has an additional +8 to Dexterity score that makes it a hell on every agility aspect.

Magic Data Storehouse. The abdomen of the mantis contains an intricate, complex set of chips and magical runes designed to mine and store data from a source of magic. The mantis will always follow the task it was programmed to do, and this usually is to stay as close as posssible to a magical source so it can impregate its data-reader tools (its front legs). It can also record poor quality audio and video as contextual backup for future data analysis. It can store data up to worth 60 days of uninterrupted readings.

Actions

Alert. As a bonus action, the Clockwork Mantis can activate its dozens of tiny lightbulbs and high-pitched beepings to make an Intimidation avility check against a creature on a range of 10ft. This check gains advantage against Tiny creatures or creatures with an Intelligence score of 4 or lower.

Kick. Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 1ft. Hit: 1 bludgeoning damage. On a hit, any Tiny target can make a Dexterity saving throw (DC 20) or become grappled by the mantis. Any Small or larger creature can be grappled too, but it won't take the "grappled" effect: the mantis will just hold to its finger or something similar.

Bite. When the mantis grapples any creature, it can make an extra attack that automatically deals 1 piercing damage to the creature. If the creature is Tiny, this damage is doubled as it aims for the head.

Description

This tiny construct is not common, but an useful tool for anyone dedicated to the arts of magic or its investigation. Its main purpose is magical data gathering, being usually programmed to get to a certain source of magic and stay as close as it can to it for a determined period of time, and to then go back to its master. Its life energy is virtually infinite as it can recharge from almost any energy source, such as magic or heat. In all other terms, it behaves like a normal mantis would do.
