Blind Senses. The umbra dragon can't use its blindsight while deafened and unable to smell.
Flyby. The umbra dragon doesn't provoke an opportunity attack when it flies out of an enemy's reach.
Keen Hearing and Smell. The umbra dragon has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on hearing or smell.
Sunlight Sensitivity. While in sunlight, the umbra dragon has disadvantage on attack rolls, as well as Wisdom (perception) checks that rely on sight.
Multiattack. The umbra dragon can make two attacks: one with its bite, and one with its tail. If on the ground, a claw attack can be made in place of a tail or bite attack.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one creature. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 3) piercing damage.
Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8 + 3) slashing damage.
Tail. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 10 ft., one creature. Hit: 16 (2d8 + 6) bludgeoning damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 16). Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained, and the umbra dragon can't constrict another target. In addition, at the start of the following turn, the target takes 9 (3d4 +3) points of bludgeoning damage.
Stunning Screech (1/Day). The umbra dragon's intricate ears close and it emits a horrific screech. Each creature within 20 feet of it that can hear it must succeed on a DC 15 saving throw or take 9 (3d6) psychic damage and be stunned until the end of the umbra dragon's next turn. On a successful save, the target resists the stun and takes half damage.
Self Preservation. If attacked, the umbra dragon can quickly shield itself using the outer armored shell of its wings, adding +2 to its AC and potentially negating any damage that would have otherwise been sustained. The umbra dragon holds this position until it chooses to leave it, is injured, or is stunned by magical means or otherwise. Can only be used once per round.
Description
Often mistaken for being dragons (as shown by their misleading name), umbra dragons have two talon studded legs, leathery wings, and a long, dexterous tail. Descriptions vary wildly from there, as these creatures are rarely seen during the day and strike faster than the eye can blink. The only thing anyone can agree upon is the sound of its unmistakable, deafening shriek.
As The Wind. The umbra dragon's incredible speed can make it a difficult target, and it's armored back doesn't make things easier. With hit-and-run tactics, keeping the beast in a confided space or grappling it are a player's best chance for success.
Creature Of The Night. Umbra Dragons are rarely seen out in the day, and even more rarely at night. Their inner wings are as dark as the night they're named for, and are patterned with hundreds of indistinguishable white spots that mirror stars. Their backs are dark grey and refract light as if made of steel. This specialized camouflage make them extremely stealthy in the right situation.
Natural Armor. Its steel like back make it harder to land attacks. This creature's underbelly has an AC 16 while it's armored back has an AC 18.
Naturally Reclusive. Umbra dragons are solitary beasts. For the most part, they keep to themselves and avoid conflict, but they are more than able to hold their own in a fight. Umbra Dragons build their nests deep in natural ravines, caves, and caverns, though they have also been reported traversing deep, undisturbed woods and jungles. Umbra dragons prefer to sleep hanging from high places and use their strong tails to accomplish this feat. Any place that suits this habit is place they could call home.
Own Worst Enemy. Nearly blind except for in the dark, umbra dragons navigate almost exclusively by blindsight, using powerful, purr-like reverberations from deep within the throat to send out sound waves that are then picked up by their sensitive ears. These invisible waves paint a general image of their surroundings, while their keen sense of smell then allows them to lock in on potential prey. For this reason, it's heightened perception does not contribute to its sight whatsoever. A straight roll should be made for any Perception checks that rely on sight. This trait leaves them exceptionally vulnerable to attacks that target their heightened senses, and keen eyed players will soon exploit them.
Protective. For several months after they're born, an umbra dragon's pups live in a pouch beneath the mother's stomach, similar to that of an opossum's. When the pups grow big enough, they leave the pouch and live in the mother's nest with her. On the rare occasion a mother Umbra Dragon is without a lair, it's young travel with her by clinging to the long, thick fur that surrounds mother's neck and are carried this way until a new lair is found.
Tamed Umbra Dragons. Their unusually high intelligence makes them susceptible to training, if an adventurer bold (or brainless) enough were willing to devote themselves to the task. This training could also extend to the learning of languages, but anything beyond simple commands is unlikely to stick.
Unknown Past, Mysterious Origins. With so little actually known about the creature, a startled Aasimar would be shocked to find the dragon understood their native tongue. Whether their ancient ancestors were created by the Gods, or they themselves the offspring of some holy coupling, the umbra dragon can comprehend Celestial.
Lair and Lair Actions
Amplify. Sound echoes and reverberates in tight spaces. Area of effect on the umbra dragon's Stunning Screech is increased and completely encompasses the lair, as long as said lair is only 100 feet in every direction or less.
Stalactites. The ceiling is covered in jagged stalactites. The umbra dragon can freely hang from and cling to these in an attempt to gain partial cover. After the use of Stunning Screech and a meet strength DC 13, a cascade of stalactites will shower down on anyone within the lair, including the umbra dragon. The players and the creature must succeed on a DC 15 or be inflicted with 15 (5d6) points of bludgeoning damage, along with 6 (2d6) points of piercing damage. No other action can be taken by the umbra dragon after this special attack is preformed. Partial cover is impossible after this attack is made.
Stalagmites. Right side up, jagged stalagmites cover large pockets of the cave floor and are considered difficult terrain to traverse. The umbra dragon, used to the familiar terrain, can traverse these areas at a climbing speed of 30 feet and/or completely avoid these areas by crawling along the rocky walls.
