Cloyed Smell. The Catoblepas has disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell.

Overwhelming Odour. The Catoblepas is immune to effects that rely on smell.

Stench. Any creature that starts its turn within 30 feet of the Catoblepas must succeed on a DC 17 Constitution saving throw against poison. On a failed save, the creature spends its action that turn retching and reeling and is poisoned until the start of its next turn. Creatures that don’t need to breathe or are immune to poison automatically succeed on this saving throw. On a successful saving throw, the creature is immune to the catoblepas’s stench for 24 hours.

Charge. If the catoblepas moves at least 20 feet straight toward a target and then hits it with a gore attack on the same turn, the target takes an extra 13 (3d8) piercing damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 18 Strength saving throw or be pushed up to 10 feet away and knocked prone.

Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If the Catoblepas fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.

Actions

Multiattack. The Catoblepas makes one Hooves attack, one Gore attack, and one Tail attack.

GoreMelee Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 21 (3d8 + 8) piercing damage.

HoovesMelee Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (2d8 + 8) slashing damage.

TailMelee Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, reach 25 ft., one target. Hit: 25 (5d6 + 8) bludgeoning damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or be pushed 10 feet away from the catoblepas and knocked prone.

Poison Breath (recharge 5–6). The Catoblepas exhales its horrid, stinking breath in a 60-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 21 Constitution saving throw, taking 47 (8d12) poison damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. If the saving throw fails by 5 or more, the target instead takes 97 (16d12) poison damage.

Legendary Actions

The Ancient Catoblepas can take 1 legendary action, and only at the end of another creature's turn. The Catoblepas regains spent legendary actions at the end of a long rest.

Diffuse. The Catoblepas ejects poison from its very pores and turns the surrounding land into an unliveable bog. Any creature within 100ft of The Catoblepas must make a DC 20 Constitution saving throw against poison. On a failed save the creature is blinded and poisoned until the end of its next turn. The terrain within 100ft of the Catoblepas becomes difficult and any creature entering the area must make a DC 20 Constitution saving throw against poison. On a failed save the creature is blinded and poisoned until the end of its next turn.

Description

The Ancient Catoblepas is an aggressive beast at the best of times, willing to knock down trees, fences, even small houses to eat whatever it finds interesting, be that meal plant or animal or human being. Though younger Catoblepas prefer swamps, the Ancient Catoblepas has been known to take up residence in plains and forests Usually near lakes or at river deltas places that it can wallow in the water and mud. Few creatures linger near an Ancient Catoblepas’s feeding ground because of the monster’s unfathomably poisonous stench, only rot-loving predators such as oozes or exceptionally large otyughs can survive for long in such regions. The Ancient Catoblepas has grown so toxic that trees wilt and grass dies of in the wake of its passage, no water source near such a creature could ever be safe for drinking.

A catoblepas’ primary motivation is hunting and exerting its dominance over lesser creatures in its territory. Easily detected by its foul odor, the creature need not tolerate the presence of wild animals, humanoid tribes, or even predators. The massive bulk of the poisonous brute lets it bully out other Large creatures such as Hydra or even some dragons.

Attempting to domesticate an Ancient catoblepas for use as a guard animal would be as useless as it would be impossible. The monster’s intractable nature and not insignificant intelligence makes it more likely to wipe out entire villages with its breath. Some live stock forced to live within the creatures toxic corruption for to long have been known to become blighted and begin spewing their own poisons onto the earth.

A catoblepas’s sense of smell is blunted by its own ungodly stench, and it can’t easily recognize rival odors such as skunk musk.

An Ancient Catoblepas is 30 feet long and weighs 4,400 pounds.

Lair and Lair Actions

Ancient Catoblepas usually dwell in swamps and lakes deep within the wilderness. An Ancient Catoblepas' lair Is devoid of life, dead trees and the dry remains of once vibrant grass usually surround a pool where the Catoblepas rests, and where its food can ferment. The lair is littered with the acid-pitted bones of previous meals. The lair is free from Insects and bugs as even flies cannot survive in such a place. The air would be filled with the stench of death and decay were it not impossible to smell anything beyond the stench of the beast.

Lair Actions

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the Catoblepas takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; the Catoblepas can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row:

  • Pools of water that the dragon can see within 120 feet of it belch outward in a toxic tide. Any creature on the ground within 20 feet of such a pool must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or be drenched in toxic sludge. A creature caught in this tide take 10 (3d6) Acid damage.

Regional Effects

The region containing a legendary Ancient Catoblepas' lair is warped by the Catoblepas corruption, which creates one or more of the following effects:

  • Resting within 6 miles of the lair leaves a creature exhausted, since the air is polluted and the ground slick with muck.
  • Water sources within 1 mile of the lair are supernaturally fouled. Creatures that drink such water regurgitate it within minutes.
  • Fog lightly obscures the land within 6 miles of the lair.
  • Live stock within 6 miles of the lair become agitated and aggressive.
  • Anything farmed within 6 miles of the lair is inedible

If the Catoblepas dies, livestock remain maddened, but other effects fade over 1d10 days.
