Description

Bog Drakes are serphant-like, vile creatures. They have two horns extending from their cheekbones, which curve downwards. Their scales are a black with an tint of green, which helps them remain camouflaged in their terrain. their eyes are a dark, olive green, and they posses the ability to belch acid, ruining possessions and armor. Their appearance is ghastly at best, with holes in their wings that mostly render flight, and flesh hanging from their bodies. Often, foes are frightened by the mere sight of it. Besides it appearance, the Bog Drake is not evil, just ugly. Their small size allows them to attack enemies without warning, and then disappear in it swampy homeland. They often wait in murky pools or in thick vegetation for prey to wander by. Bog Drakes are powerful enough to overpower young black dragons, and will attack one in order to gain a new home.

Lair and Lair Actions

Bog Drakes tend to lair in ancient ruins, water-submerged caves, or in hollowed-out trees. They try to make these lairs as tricky to find as possible, and will use its lair actions (see below) to hide it. A typical Bog Drake lair often consists of dead bodies, pools of water, and many, many places to hide. Bog Drakes tend to be inquisitive, which is why they have developed a reputation for attacking unwary adventurers. More often than not, these adventurers are ones that have strayed to close to a bog drake's lair. They treat their lair as a permeant home, and will drag living creatures back into it so that it can have a uninterrupted feast.

Lair Actions

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the drake takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; the drake can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row:

  • Acid pools splash outward at three opponents. each opponent must succeed on a DC 16 dexterity savings throw or be hit by the Acid Splash spell.
  • Fog surrounds one opponent. That same opponent must succeed on a DC 16 dexterity savings throw or become blinded until the end of the Bog Drake's turn.
  • A vile stench surrounds the Bog Drake in a 5 ft radius. Anyone who is in that radius or enters it must succeed on a DC 16 constitution savings throw or become poisoned. the stench lasts for 2 rounds, or until the Bog drake uses another lair action.

Regional Effects

The region containing a Bog Drake's lair is warped by the drake's magic, which creates one or more of the following effects:

  • The land within 6 miles of the lair takes twice as long as normal to traverse, since the plants grow thick and twisted, and the swamps are thick with reeking mud.
  • Water sources within 1 mile of the lair are supernaturally fouled. Enemies of the dragon that drink such water regurgitate it within minutes.
  • Fog lightly obscures the land within 6 miles of the lair.
  • Creatures that approach the lair are compelled to turn away.
  • Wildlife is plentiful despite the gloomy atmosphere.

While encountered in its lair, the Bog Drake has a challenge rating of 10

If the drake dies, all effects fade over 1d100 days.
