Deathless. Watcher is a variant Lich. Born to die and rise again endlessly, until his phylactery is destroyed. He has no knowledge of his phylactery's whereabouts however. Until that day however, he will continue to rise after he is slain. Every 2d6 days after he is slain he emerges alive once again as if affected by the True Resurrection spell.
Durable Casting. Watcher's spellcasting is less affected by efforts to unwind it. Attempts to cast Counterspell must always roll to attempt to dispel and the DC is 5 higher than normal.
Unbloodied. Watcher's deathgrip on life extends beyond his resurrection. Every round he heals an amount up to 10d8 at the beginning of his turn. He can choose to lower this healing.
Studied Martials. Watcher uses his Intelligence Modifier for his Longsword. He can modify the amount of his modifier that he applies to these attacks.
Immutable Form. Watcher is not easily changed from his form. Polymorph and similar form or material changing effects automatically fail unless originating from Watcher himself.
Spellcasting. Watcher is a 20-level spellcaster. Its spellcasting ability is Intelligence (spell save DC 22, +14 to hit with spell attacks). Watcher has following Wizard spells prepared: Cantrips (at will): Prestidigitation, Firebolt, Encode Thoughts, Acid Splash

Longsword. Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 5 ft., 1 target. Hit: 15 (1d10 + 10) slashing damage.

Description
Adversarial Mentor. Being deathless, Watcher has grown bored. He has risen to a level of power that makes little a challenge for him, if he truly applies himself. So, he periodically finds a new interest, who he begins to follow. From hence comes his name, as he watches this fledgling life. And he will interject himself occasionally as a minor challenge. He lowers his own health and consciously holds back many of his innate abilities to make each fight a challenge for himself, and frequently loses. He watches as the object of his fascination grows in power, and adjusts his own power to match, always eventually setting himself as a challenge. For a long time, if ever it seems like he will kill them, he refrains, choosing to knock them unconscious and then heal them before leaving them to wake. When at last he tires of them, he will reveal his full power and challenge them once and for all. If they fail, he destroys them and goes in search of a new object of interest.
The DM should modify what abilities and how many attacks Watcher uses according to the number and level of the party. AC, Saves, Ability Checks, and Health should similarly be modified. And finally the DM should remember that, unless shown irrefutable proof that his phylactery is destroyed, Watcher shows no concern beyond perhaps a half-hearted, almost taunting protest, at the prospect of death.
