Description

The army of the Rashidun Caliphate is composed of tens of thousands of tribesmen, drafted as spearmen. They serve the Caliph and his appointed generals. Spearmen with warhorses make up the cavalry, and those riding camels make up skirmishing cavalry. As guards they can patrol a city, or fortified town, and are also used as the bodyguards of merchants and nobles. Their prime function however, is as a fighting force in a battle. Under the brilliant leadership of generals Khalid ibn al-Walid and Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, the Arab spearmen and cavalry famously conquered the Sassanid Empire, as well as much of the Byzantine Empire, including Egypt, the Levant, Syria, and North Africa.

They are not well equipped since they only recently burst out of the deserts of Arabia to conquer their weakened neighbours. They wield a spear, and a hide shield. Arabs wear white cloth and linen robes to diffuse the heat and keep out the sun. They are excellent at fighting in the desert, tiring their enemies out through skirmishing and attrition. In a pitched battle, they surge forward as a mass in a fanatic charge. Arabs believe in Islam, and warriors who die fighting to expand the faith (Jihad) are guaranteed a place in heaven. This gives the spearmen high morale.
