Traits

Sunlight Sensitivity. While in sunlight, the kobold has disadvantage on attack rolls, as well as on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight.

Pack Tactics. The kobold has advantage on an attack roll against a creature if at least one of the kobold's allies is within 5 feet of the creature and the ally isn't incapacitated.

Petrifying Gaze. If a creature starts its turn within 30 feet of the Kobold and the two of them can see each other, the Kobold can force the creature to make a DC 12 Constitution saving throw if the Kobold isn't incapacitated. On a failed save, the creature magically begins to turn to stone and is restrained. It must repeat the saving throw at the end of its next turn. On a success, the effect ends. On a failure, the creature is petrified until freed by the greater restoration spell or other magic.

A creature that isn't surprised can avert its eyes to avoid the saving throw at the start of its turn. If it does so, it can't see the basilisk until the start of its next turn, when it can avert its eyes again. If it looks at the Kobold in the meantime, it must immediately make the save.

Description

Kobolds are craven reptilian humanoids that commonly infest dungeons. They make up for their physical ineptitude with a cleverness for trap making. some kobold eggs are found and raised by basilisks, which causes them to develop traits that would normally be exclusive to a basilisk. these kobolds are often loners, though on rare occasions they might join kobold tribes and pass their gifts on to their children. This has become more common as kobold tribes who take on basilisk-born kobolds often find ways to work around the problem of the basilisk-born kobold's gaze. A notable example is the Flutterwing tribe, who invented a pair of tinted goggles that can be flipped up in battle for maximum stone-gaze efficiency without also petrifying their kobold allies. these kobold tribes also often use the basilisk-born kobold's spit to de-petrify any allies that do get stoned.
