Description

Missleading Names: As with many creatures in the lands of Osaposhae and especially in the mysterious depths of the Underdark the Blindwolf is not in fact a wolf. A larger earth-bound cousin of the bat, the blindwolf fills the medium-sized pack-predator niche in the twisting caverns and caves. The blindwolf does indeed lack eyes, making it immune to light based blinding methods, but can echo-locate with pinpoint precision if it's ears and mouth are unhindered. It's sense of smell is enhanced as well though not to the point of surface wolves. Their ability to run along walls and ceiling nearly as fast as the ground allows them to assault prey from many angles, leaping onto hovering prey and weighing it down while razor sharp teeth bleed it out.

Echolocation: Lacking the soft and vulnerable eyes of its flying cousins the blindwolf is reliant almost entirely on its echo-location to navigate it's home. As such creatures that can hear the high pitched squeaks and barks of a pack on the move will usually have fair warning before they arrive. Unfortunately most surface dwellers cannot hear such a high pitch, Underdark natives such deep gnomes and dark elves being the most notable amongst those that can perceive them, the cacophony of their barks can still be extremely disorienting to those not prepared for it.

Hunter of the Aberrant: The abundance of the so-called "aberrant" style of creature in the Underdark has affected the development of many of the native organisms there, the blindwolf in particular has developed a taste for the usually dangerous to ingest flesh of these twisted creatures, it's screech appearing to assault the very essence of their abominable prey. Additionally aberrant flesh has similar effects on blindwolves as a healing potion, sealing normally deadly wounds hastily when devoured. Upon scenting the blood of an aberrant being their echoing barks fill the caverns with excitement as the hunt begins.

Useful Neighbors, Deadly Companions: Though aberrants are their preferred prey the other denizens of the Underdark are not off the menu. This being said most Underdark settlements will tolerate or even encourage the presence of pack nearby to dissuade the more dangerous beings. Some even go so far as to domesticate the blindwolf for use as pest control. Considered difficult to tame this is usually only done by places and societies that can afford to fund a full-time handler for them, stranded Gith clans, Dark-elf Illithid-hunter inquisitors, Duegar Bastions, deep-druid communes, and Dwarven Citadels are among those most likely to employ a hunting pack.
