Necrotic Substance. A creature that touches the Young Bone Ooze or hits it with a melee attack while within 5 feet of it takes 4 (1d8) necrotic damage.
Ooze Cube. The Young Bone Ooze takes up its entire space. Other creatures can enter the space, but a creature that does so is subjected to the Bone Ooze's Engulf and has disadvantage on the saving throw. Creatures inside the cube can be seen but have total cover.
A creature within 5 feet of the Bone Ooze can take an action to pull a creature or object out of the Bone Ooze. Doing so requires a successful DC 26 Strength check, and the creature making the attempt takes 26 (4d12) necrotic damage.
The Young Bone Ooze can hold only one Large creature or up to 8 Medium or smaller creatures inside it at a time.
Osseous Constitution. While the Young Bone Ooze has over half of it's hit points left, it has a damage threshold of 20 damage. Any damage that fails to meet or exceed the Young Bone Ooze's damage threshold doesn't reduce it's hit points. Additionally, while the Young Bone Ooze has over half half it's hit points, it's AC is 20. When the Bone Ooze has half or less than half of it's hit points left, it's AC becomes 10 and all bludgeoning, piercing and slashing damage that it deals is halved.
Regeneration. The Bone Ooze regains 20 hit points at the start of its turn. The Bone Ooze dies only if it starts its turn with 0 hit points and doesn't regenerate.
Engulf. The Bone Ooze moves up to its speed. While doing so, it can enter Large or smaller creatures' spaces. Whenever the ooze enters a creature's space, the creature must make a DC 19 Dexterity saving throw.
On a successful save, the creature can choose to be pushed 5 feet back or to the side of the Young Bone Ooze. A creature that chooses not to be pushed suffers the consequences of a failed saving throw.
On a failed save, the ooze enters the creature's space, and the creature takes 6 (1d12) necrotic damage and is engulfed. The engulfed creature can't breathe, is restrained, and takes 12 (2d12) necrotic damage, plus an additional 6 (1d12) bludgeoning, 6 (1d12) piercing and 6 (1d12) slashing damage at the start of each of the Bone Ooze's turns. When it moves, the engulfed creature moves with it.
An engulfed creature can try to escape by taking an action to make a DC 19 Strength check. On a success, the creature escapes and enters a space of its choice within 5 feet of the Bone Ooze.
Pseudopod. Melee Weapon Attack: +15 to hit, reach 10 ft., one creature. Hit: 6 (1d12) necrotic damage, plus an additional 19 (3d12) piercing damage.
Shower of Bones (Recharge 5 - 6). The Bone Ooze sprays bone fragments in a 30-foot cone. Each creature in that line must make a DC 19 Dexterity saving throw, taking 15 (6d4) bludgeoning, 15 (6d4) piercing damage and 15 (6d4) slashing damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful save.
Spear of Bones (Recharge 5 - 6). The Bone Ooze sprays bone fragments in a 100-foot line that is 10 feet wide. Each creature in that line must make a DC 19 Dexterity saving throw, taking 15 (6d4) bludgeoning, 15 (6d4) piercing damage and 15 (6d4) slashing damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful save.
Bone Absorption. If the Young Bone Ooze reduces a creature to 0 hit points with a melee attack, the Young Bone Ooze can use it's reaction to regain 40 hit points.
The Bone Ooze can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The Bone Ooze regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.
Engulf. The Young Bone Ooze makes an engulf attack.
Move. The Young Bone Ooze moves up to it's speed.
Absorb (2 actions). The Young Bone Ooze makes a pseudopod attack. If a creature is hit while they have less than half of their hit points they must make a DC 19 Constitution saving throw or die on a failed save, or take 15 (6d4) piercing damage plus 27 (6d8) necrotic damage with a successful one.
Description
This massive mound is covered in a carpet of needle-like spines. Plates of bone rise to its surface and sink back within its mass, giving rise to strange angular forms as it moves.
Horrifying creatures of semi-liquid bone, bone oozes are created from the greatest boneyards imaginable. Massive battles may create these abominations, especially if they took place on unhallowed ground or involved undead combatants. The bone ooze that pulls itself from these places seeks to devour bones of all kinds, extracting them from the living and the dead alike.
A bone ooze’s only ecological role is to consume. These monstrous predators can destroy entire ecosystems in a matter of days, reducing the skeletons of its victims to a slime which then joins the bone ooze. A bone ooze that consumes about a city's amount of creatures divides, and the two oozes roll their separate ways. If they ever cross each other’s paths again, the creatures will attempt to devour each other.
In combat, bone oozes are implacable, rolling over their opponents and leaving them with bleeding, suppurating wounds. If attacked at range, they automatically react with their breath weapons, spraying a storm of bone shards that can shred enemies. Bone oozes are attracted to and seemingly mesmerized by negative energy—some clever undead monsters have taken advantage of this by “domesticating” the oozes through repeated exposure to negative energy. Such undead masters should be careful, though, as the bone ooze will swiftly turn on and devour any creature that fails to supply it with its fix.
