Traits

Baby Tail Spike Regrowth. The baby manticore has twelve tail spikes. Used spikes regrow when the baby manticore finishes a short rest.

Actions

Multiattack. The baby manticore makes two to three attacks: one with its bite and one with its claws or three with its tail spikes.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d8 + 2) piercing damage.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d6 + 2) slashing damage.

Tail Spike. Ranged Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, range 100/200 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d8 + 3) piercing damage.

Reactions

If reduced to half health for the first time in combat, the baby manticore will disengage and run or fly away and find a place to hide while the threat is dealt with or until the threat goes away. It will not come out of hiding when afraid even after combat ends unless coaxed or unless an hour goes by.

Description

A baby manticore has a vaguely humanoid head, the body of a lion, and the wings of a dragon all representing younger versions of those creatures compared to an adult manticore. Its long tail ends in a smaller cluster of deadly spikes that can impale prey at impressive range the same as an adult manticore.

A baby manticore is less developed than a full fledged adult and seems not as ugly or even cute to most humanoid creatures. A baby manticore is slightly more aware of it's surroundings than an adult as babies tend to be more curious and like to explore. It acts comparatively like a small child or young toddler and has speech patterns of a smart young human child. Baby manticores raised away from their mother's by more intelligent beings have been known to be more intelligent than that of their more "wild" counterparts, being able to string complex sentences together and hold small talk.

In combat, a baby manticore favors biting and clawing at its prey over using it's tail spikes but if a creature it can see is out of range, it will be prompted to use it's tail spikes.
