Traits

Amphibious. The dragon can breathe air and water.

Styx Adaptation: Styx dragons are immune to all harmful effects of the River Styx as well as any effect that would steal or modify its memories or detect or read its thoughts.

Magic Resistance. The styx dragon has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Magic Weapons. The styx dragon’s weapon attacks are magical.

Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If the dragon fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.

Innate Spellcasting. The adult styx dragon's innate spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 16). The adult styx dragon can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components:

Fetid Waters. A creature that drinks from the Styx or is otherwise submerged by the waters, such as with the control water, is targeted by a feeblemind spell (save DC 15). A creature must repeat the saving throw whenever it starts its turn in the river, until it fails the save. A feebleminded creature can drink from the Styx and swim in its waters without suffering any additional deleterious effects. The effect can be ended early only with the greater restoration, heal, and wish spells.

If a creature fails its saving throw and remains under the spell’s effect for 30 consecutive days, the effect becomes permanent (no save) and the creature loses all its memories, becoming a near-mindless shell of its former self. At that point, nothing short of a wish spell or divine intervention can undo the effect.

Actions

Multiattack. The dragon can use its Frightful Presence. It then makes three attacks: one with its bite and two with its tail.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 15 ft., 1 target. Hit: 17 (2d10 + 6) piercing damage and the target must make a DC 18 Constitution saving throw or be poisoned and afflicted with the Flesh Rot disease. Over the next 1d4 hours, the creature’s flesh begins to decay, causing the creature to have disadvantage on Charisma checks and vulnerability to all damage. The disease lasts 7 days or until removed with lesser restoration, remove curse, or similar magic.

Tail. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (2d8 + 6) bludgeoning damage.

Constrict. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (2d8 + 6) bludgeoning damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 24). Until this grapple ends, the creature is restrained, and the Styx dragon can't constrict another target.

Frightful Presence. Each creature of the dragon's choice that is within 120 feet of the dragon and aware of it must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened for 1 minute. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. If a creature's saving throw is successful or the effect ends for it, the creature is immune to the dragon's Frightful Presence for the next 24 hours.

Breath Weapon (Recharge 5–6). The Styx dragon uses one of the following breath weapons.

  • Acid Breath. The Styx dragon exhales acid in a 60-foot line that is 5 feet wide. Each creature in that line must make a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw to avoid the blast of acid. On a failure, the target takes 36 (8d8) acid damage and is covered in caustic bile for 1 minute or until a creature uses its action to scrape or wash the acid off itself or another creature. A creature covered in the bile takes 18 (4d8) acid damage at the start of each of its turns. On a success, the creature takes half as much damage and isn't covered in acid.
  • Stupefying Gas. The Styx dragon exhales a choking red gas in a 60ft cone. Each creature within the radius must make a DC 18 Constitution saving throw or have the creature's Intelligence score reduced by 1d4 and take 27 (6d8) psychic damage. The target dies if this reduces its Intelligence to 0. The reduction lasts until the target finishes a short or long rest or is targeted by a lesser restoration or similar spell.
Legendary Actions

The dragon can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The dragon regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

Detect. The dragon makes a Wisdom (Perception) check.

Tail Attack. The dragon makes a tail attack.

Constrict (Costs 2 Actions). The dragon makes a constrict attack.

Description

Also known as shadowdrakes or darkwyrms, Styx dragons haunt the putrid waters of the River Styx throughout its nearly infinite length. One of the few creatures immune to the harmful effects of the river, Styx dragons swim with impunity across the top layers of all the Lower Planes, feasting on fiends and any other creature they can find and catch. A Styx dragon has a long, serpentine body with tiny, flipper-like claws that are useless on land and in combat. Its wings are too small to carry it aloft, but help to propel it through the water. Its tail splits into two long, bladed whips that it can use to slash and grab its prey. A Styx dragon’s scales are slimy and range from dark brown to rusty red. Its eyes glow with a lurid yellow light. Styx dragons make their lairs by burrowing into the mud on the banks of the Styx. They do not like to leave their native plane, but if one is forcibly brought to the Material Plane, it will thrive in fetid water. Styx dragons normally subsist on the flesh of fiends, but enjoy eating any meat—particularly rotting carrion.

A Styx dragon’s physical attacks are limited: It attacks with the twin blades of its tail instead of claws, it cannot use its wings effectively, and it does not gain tail slap attacks in addition to its tail blades. Instead, this dragon uses its innate magical abilities to drown its victims whenever possible.
