Description
The army of the kingdom of Benin in southern Nigeria is composed of thousands of tribesmen and cattle herders, drafted as spearmen. They serve the king (the Oba) and his appointed generals. The Oba is worshipped as a divine figure. Soldiers as guards can patrol a city, or fortified town, and are also used as the bodyguards of merchants and nobles. When navigating lagoons, soldiers are transported on long canoes.
They wield an iron tipped spear, and a hide shield. Many wear a protective garment of leather with chains or iron necklaces, and a leather helmet. The city of Benin is composed of thatch and wooden houses, defended by a large circular earthworks wall (made in the 15th century). Benin is wealthy due to controlling trade routes, and through selling slaves, ivory, pepper, and palm oil to the Portuguese. Benin has skilled artisans that make bronze, iron and ivory statues and tablets. The people of Benin believe in ancestor spirits and local gods. Benin nobles keep slaves, and occasionally during a ritual festival, some criminals are sacrificed to the god of iron. Bodyguards, wives and slaves also die when their king does, to join him in the afterlife.
