Traits

Bypass Immunities. The dragon's attacks and spells ignore all damage resistances or immunities, except those granted by artifacts.

Dreamwalker. The dragon can enter the dreams of an unconscious creature using a bonus action. This functions like the Dream spell, except the duration lasts until the dragon ends the effect or the target awakens, and when the target awakens it cannot recall anything about the dragon beyond any conversations it had with it.

Elemental Vulnerability. The moonstone dragon is vulnerable to damage dealt by attacks or magical effects that utilize air, earth, fire, or water (such as the damage dealt by Whirlwind, Earthquake, Burning Hands, or Control Water).

Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If the dragon fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.

Spellcasting. The dragon is a 5th-level spellcaster. Its spellcasting ability is Wisdom (spell save DC 17, +9 to hit with spell attacks). the dragon has the following cleric spells prepared:

Cantrips (at will): Sacred Flame, Spare the Dying, Thaumaturgy, Word of Radiance

1st level (4 slots): Bane, Command, Healing Word

2nd level (3 slots): Calm Emotions, Spiritual Weapon, Zone of Truth

3rd level (2 slots): Clairvoyance, Mass Healing Word, Spirit Guardians

Sunlight Hypersensitivity. The dragon takes 15 radiant damage when it starts its turn in sunlight. While in sunlight, it has disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks. The dragon is not immune to radiant damage dealt by this trait, including by spells that use sunlight, such as the Sunburst spell. If the dragon is reduced to 0 hit points by damage from this trait, it falls unconscious but is stabilized, and is forcibly teleported to the Ethereal Plane, which it cannot leave until it regains all of its hit points.

Actions

Multiattack. The dragon can use its Awesome Presence. It then makes three attacks: one with its bite and two with its claws.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (2d10 + 6) piercing damage.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d6 + 6) slashing damage.

Tail. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (2d8 + 6) bludgeoning damage.

Awesome Presence. Each creature of the dragon's choice that is within 120 feet of the dragon and aware of it must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw or become incapacitated and have its speed reduced to 0 for 1 minute. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. If a creature's saving throw is successful or the effect ends for it, the creature is immune to the dragon's Awesome Presence for the next 24 hours. Additionally, if the effect ends on an affected creature and the dragon is not within its line of sight, it loses all memory of encountering the dragon.

Moonlight Breath (Recharge 5–6). The dragon exhales motes of light in a 60-foot cone. Any spells of 8th level or lower and any active potion effects in that area end immediately, excluding effects necessary for keeping a creature alive (such as a Water Breathing spell cast on a creature underwater). Each creature in that area must make a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw or fall unconscious for 10 minutes. A creature that cannot normally be put to sleep by magic is still affected. This effect ends for a creature if the creature takes damage or someone uses an action to wake it. If the effect ends on an affected creature and the dragon is not within its line of sight, it loses all memory of encountering the dragon.

Planar Teleport. The dragon magically teleports to the Ethereal Plane, the Feywild, or the Material Plane. It appears in the space it last occupied on that plane, or in the closest unoccupied space if something is within the space it last occupied. The dragon cannot use this ability if it is bound by chains made of gold.

Legendary Actions

The dragon can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The dragon regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

Cast Spell. The dragon casts a spell of 1st level or lower.

Tail Attack. The dragon makes a tail attack.

Wing Attack (Costs 2 Actions). The dragon beats its wings. Each creature within 10 feet of the dragon must succeed on a DC 19 Dexterity saving throw or take 13 (2d6 + 6) bludgeoning damage and be knocked prone. The dragon can then fly up to half its flying speed.

Description

The most elusive and unknown of the lesser gem dragons, the moonstone dragon is shrouded in mystery and speculation.

A moonstone dragon's head is long and its snout narrows towards the middle and then begins to widen again towards the tip, giving the tip of the snout an almost spearhead-like shape. It has ears shaped like fins, with the tip of its tail possessing something similar in appearance.

A moonstone dragon's silver scales shimmer beautifully, and with a hint of blue when its in the moonlight. Its eyes are a bright, glowing white, devoid of visible pupils or irises.

Planar Isolationists. Moonstone dragons are extremely solitary and will rarely interact with another creature, at least physically. They are claimed to reside most frequently in the Ethereal Plane or the Feywild, though even on the latter plane they keep a low profile. They care very little for the affairs of creatures from the material plane, though it will occasionally interact with creatures that become connected with the Feywild.

Unusual Abilities. Moonstone dragons possess abilities and weaknesses unique among dragonkind. Their attacks are capable of bypassing any immunity short of those granted by legendary items of great power, they can enter the dreams of a sleeping creature and shape those dreams to their will, and their breath weapon consists of billowing motes of moonlight that nullify most spells and potion effects, as well as being capable of putting to sleep even those normally immune to magic-based sleep effects. Instead of inciting fear within their foes, they instead cause them to stare in awe at the dragon's majesty, and it can shift planes instantly at will. Many of its abilities also leave those it meets forgetful of their encounter, unable to recall anything about the dragon. All this, as well as its vulnerability to sunlight and elemental attacks, as well as its inability to shift planes if bound by chains of gold make for a very unusual dragon, with scholars wondering how it acquired these odd traits. With its rarity and secluded nature, the answer may never be clear.

Shrouded in Mystery. Moonstone dragons appear to be connected to the Feywild, though how and to what extent is unknown. It is known to visit other creatures with fey connections, such as warlocks devoted to fey lords or ladies, in their dreams. There, the dragons offers useful advice for whatever the creature's quest is, as long as that quest is to the benefit of the fey. Given its scarcity, many legends have cropped up about the dragon. Such legends include that they subsist exclusively on moonbeams and nectar from Feywild flowers, or that their tears are made of liquid mithral with which ancient and powerful elves fashion chain mail. It is also said that they disappear into a shower of moonlight when they die. If one dies under positive conditions, its heart turns into pure adamantine. Furthermore, if one slays another creature unjustly, its body turns to a pillar of sand and its soul is instantly destroyed. The validity of these claims can hardly be measured. The dragons provide no such answers to any questions about themselves, and other fey creatures either do not know or refuse to answer as well.

Peculiar Treasures. A moonstone dragon's hoard is said to be just as strange and unique as itself. While a moonstone dragon's lair has never been closely examined, they are said to possess no coins or objects made from copper or gold, only silver and platinum. It is claimed they keep no gems in their hoard, an especially strange fact given that they are a lesser gem dragon, most of which value their namesake gems over all else. Instead of gems, they allegedly keep small beads of pure mithral.

Lair and Lair Actions

A Moonstone Dragon’s Lair

A moonstone dragon's lair is just as mysterious as the dragon itself. They are said to rarely keep actual lairs, instead burying their treasure in mounds within the Feywild, though some claim that they occasionally make lairs within caverns deep in the woodlands of the Feywild, or on extremely rare occasions, the Material Plane.

Lair Actions

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the dragon takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects:

  • The dragon creates a flash of moonlight in a space it can see within 120 feet of it. Each creature within a 10-foot radius centered on that point must make a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or be blinded until the end of its next turn.
  • Light sources within the lair are suddenly snuffed out. Non-magical light sources are extinguished and spells of 6th level or lower end instantly. Until initiative count 20 on the next round, no light can be created from non-magical sources or spells of 6th level or lower.

Regional Effects

The region containing a legendary moonstone dragon’s lair is warped by the dragon’s magic.

  • Once per day, the dragon can alter the light levels within a 1-mile radius centered on its lair. Natural sunlight and all artificial light within that radius or that enters it afterwards becomes dim light. This effect lasts up to 4 hours or until dismissed by the dragon.
  • Flowering plants within 3 miles of the dragon's lair produce more nectar and larger, tastier fruit.
  • Creatures that sleep within 1 mile of the dragon's lair fall into a deep slumber. A creature that sleeps within this area sleeps for 2 hours longer than what they would usually, and cannot be prematurely awoken from their sleep by anything short of taking damage.

If the dragon dies, changed weather reverts to normal, as described in the spell, and the other effects fade in 1d10 days.
