Description

Beavers are large aquatic rodents. They feed on wood, and are found in temperate to boreal climates with adequate tree cover and water. They can build large structures and are capable of living in relatively large population densities. Beaver are primarily active during twilight or nighttime hours. They have up to 6 kits per litter once per year. They build lodges with underwater entrances that are impenetrable to bears, wolves, and trappers. They have thick fur that insulates them well, and they are active during the winter, even when the water is frozen. They cache food underwater near their lodges. They also may live in bank-side dens. They raise the water table by building dams, which can reach thousands of feet in length. Beaver defecate in the water to prevent predators from detecting their activity. They are faster in the water than on land and their eyes feature a nictating membrane that allows them to see in the water. Their eyes, ears, and nose are projected dorsally, allowing them to observe above-water occurrences while exposing less than an inch of their body. Their fur is valued for its insulating properties and great ability to make felt, while their castoreum glands have alchemical/culinary properties.
