Weak Spot. A narrow strip of the Purple dragons hide on either side of its body is thin and translucent, adapted for greater flexibility underground. This is a weak spot that the dragon attempts to hide at all times, pressing itself low to the ground. The spot is vulnerable to bludgeoning, piercing and slashing damage. Attacks targeting this area treat the dragon's AC as 21.
Sunlight Sensitivity. While in sunlight, the dragon has disadvantage on attack rolls, as well as on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight.
Multiattack. The dragon can use its Frightful Presence. It then makes three attacks: one with its bite and two with its claws.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (2d10 + 6) piercing damage plus 4 (1d8) acid damage.
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d6 + 6) slashing damage.
Tail. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 20 (3d8 + 6) bludgeoning damage.
Frightful Presence. Each creature of the dragon's choice that is within 120 feet of the dragon and aware of it must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened for 1 minute. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. If a creature's saving throw is successful or the effect ends for it, the creature is immune to the dragon's Frightful Presence for the next 24 hours.
Tar Breath (Recharge 5–6). The dragon exhales a black tar-like in a 60-foot line. Each creature in that cone must make a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw, taking 54 (12d8) acid damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. Creatures that fail their saving throw are restrained until they use an action to free themselves and continue to take 1 acid damage every round that the tar remains on them.
Flammable: The tar is flammable, and if it comes into contact with an open flame will ignite. Creatures covered in tar who touch a flame now on fire and begin taking 12 (3d6) fire damage at the beginning of each of their turns. The flames can only be doused by smothering them or magic - water will not work.
Sticky Mess: The tar cannot be removed from the body unless by washing it with animal fat and salt of hartshorn (ammonium bicarbonate). If the tar is allowed to dry after 1 hour, it becomes brittle and can be broken.
Draining Breath* (Recharge 1-2). The dragon exhales black mist in a 90-foot cone, then inhales it. Each creature caught in the cone must make a DC 24 Constitution saving throw or have disadvantage on all Strength, Constitution, and Dexterity-based rolls for 2 (1d4) turns. The creature can repeat the saving throw on each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. The dragon also restores 13 (2d12) health for each creature afflicted by the blast.
Slippery Scales. The dragon can end the grappled or restrained condition on itself as a reaction.
The dragon can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The dragon regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.
Detect. The dragon makes a Wisdom (Perception) check.
Tail Attack. The dragon makes a tail attack.
Tar Splash (Costs 2 Actions). Range: 30ft. The dragon spews a globule of tar witch explodes at a spot within range. Each creature within 10 feet of the tar must succeed on a DC 19 Dexterity saving throw or take 13 (2d6 + 6) acid damage and be stuck in the tar and restrained. The dragon can then move up to half its walking speed.
Description
The Purple Dragon is a dragon in the Anguis family, also known as Wyrms. It has a long serpentine body, its vestigial wings having adapted into upwards facing claws to help it when navigating tunnels. They can grow to immense sizes.
Purple dragons rival the Green dragon for cunning, and the Red for greed. They are seldom recorded as they live solely in the labyrinthine regions of the underdark, but on rare occasions, ancient Purples will disturb the upper world to feed upon oil reservoirs near the surface.
Lair and Lair Actions
Purple dragons explore deep caverns of the Underdark, tunneling and excavating massive honeycomb lairs with multiple levels during their long lifetimes. They horde precious minerals and metals, distributing these lesser treasures across their lair, but they covet crude oils above all other things, both as a food source and treasure. They will seek out any reservoirs of oil to build their lairs around, destroying anyone in the way. There are multiple access tunnels between rooms, and between levels, that the dragon can squeeze through and has memorized.
Lair Actions
On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the Purple Dragon takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; the Purple Dragon can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row:
- Part of the ceiling overhead collapses above one creature that the dragon can see within 120ft of it. The creature must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or take 10 (3d6) bludgeoning damage and be knocked prone and buried. The buried target is restrained and unable to breathe or stand up. A creature can take an action to make a DC 10 Strength check, ending the buried state on a success.
- The ground gives way in a 10ft square that the dragon can see within 60ft of it. Any creatures within the area must succeed on a DC 12 Dexterity saving throw or tumble 15ft into a bubbling pool of oil. Creatures in the pool have disadvantage on strength and dexterity checks and saves while in the pool of slick oil. The oil is flammable and if ignited will cause any creatures in contact with the oil to take 15 fire damage every round.
- The walls and access tunnels to the room where the dragon is present shift, completely altering the layout of this section of the lair. Some access tunnels that did not exist prior are created between adjacent rooms, and some adjacent rooms no longer can be accessed. This action can only shift the walls around the room, and cannot create new rooms or suddenly conceal a creature, including the dragon, behind a wall.
Regional Effects
Tunnels within 1 mile of the dragon's lair possess a airstream that carries a strangely musky, dusty smell, like shed snake-skins. Creatures that travel through the region find their limbs heavier and breath short. Creatures that travel for more than 3 hours at a time without a short rest gain 1 level of exhaustion.
Existing tunnels gain twists and turns that were not there before, and occasionally are joined by cross-tunnels that vanish the next day.
Wildlife avoids this region except for oozes, however any oozes never grow past Medium in size.
