Health Levels.
Retainers do not have hit points, instead they have health levels. A retainer has health levels equal in number to their level. Each time a retainer is hit by an attack, they make a Constitution saving thow. The DC is the average damage from the attack.
If they succeed, they take no damage. If they fail, they loose one health level per die of damage from the attack. If they loose their final health level, they drop prone and begin bleeding out.
Retainers regain a health level after each short rest, and each die of healing used on them recovers one health level. Retainers regain all health levels on a long rest.

Spell Attack. Dex save DC 13, range 60 ft., one target. Hit: 2d8 radiant damage. Flame-like radiance descends on a creature that you can see within range. The target gains no benefit from cover for this saving throw.
